FRENEMIES

A Frenemy will smile and glad-hand you,
All the time looking to run you through
With a figurative rapier, no less,
Such overt action would make a great mess!
It happens in so many walks of life
Always out there, striving for strife.
Big business, bureaucracy, and politics too.
Competitors always conniving to screw,
Against one for unfair advantage, no less,
Where does it all end? We can’t second guess.

So, you’ve done quite well at your stated work objective?
But competitors whisper that it’s all defective.
The water-cooler set make sure bosses do hear.
That your work’s no good and decidedly queer.
The better one does, the more likely it’ll happen,
Frenemies, busy-bodies, out there yapping.
And there was your “friend” Jeremy Snide,
Leading their endeavours in a spectrum most wide.
“Et tu Brute?” Such thought comes to mind,
He’s going all out to get you in a bind!

Politics, a stage for Frenemies to thrive,
Raw ambition and greed, their force that does drive.
The “night of the long knives”, a daily event.
The mind-set of participants decidedly bent.
Prime Ministers can be unseated at the drop of a hat!
No crocodile tears given, after such a spat.
Because that is how they won their own rise,
Now, in like manner, their stature reduced in size,
Usurped by their own Party Faithful too,
Masquerading as though it was a military coup.
Italy and Australia, to mention a few,
Went through Prime Ministers almost monthly, they do.
Or, at least they did, not long ago, as was then reported.
With political shenanigans daily cavorted.

So, with Frenemies like that, who needs enemies?
One can always rely on Frenemies to do the wrong thing!
Especially if, self-gratification they can bring.
