MISSING IN ACTION

There he was reminiscing of old,
Of his girlfriend of youth, yes, ‘twas Marigold.
She had been the apple of his eye.
So very long ago, yes, time did fly.
They had pledged, each other to wed,
But then that telegram, “Missing in Action, Presumed Dead!”
Marigold had shed a tear, or two.
Then gone out on the town, right on cue.
Down at the “local” she met Jeremy Watt,
Who displayed the makings of a drunken sot.
Their eyes did meet, a romantic flicker.
And then, about dinner, they began to bicker.
“I want Chinese.” “I do not!”
“But it’s all just food, out of a pot.”
And so it went on, so much blathering,
Soon other Pub customers joined the gathering.

It took a week, or, perhaps three,
Before the M.I.A. was back for tea.
“Missing In Action”, yes that is true.”
“But now I’ve been found, what a to do!”
“Now that I’ve been returned to the fold,”
“I urgently need to call my Marigold.”
A telegram was dispatched, Post Haste.
The matter was urgent, no time to waste!
“Marigold, it heart-felt read,”
“I’m alive, and we must be wed!”
Marigold sent back, by way of return,
“You’ve left it too late, my ardour to earn.”
“I have since become betrothed to another,”
“Wedding invitations have been sent to my mother.”
“Please, now, listen to what has been said.”
“It is impossible for us to be wed!”
