Black Thumb Chronicles : Round 2 💪🛎 : Spring 2018 Edition

BTC is back for round two!

It's been a while since I wrote about or worked in the garden. We let it grow wild during winter and it's looking all over the place. With spring upon us and Christmas feeling like a few blinks away it was time we got to work.

How it looked 2 days ago. The rocket seeded, the broccoli devoured, the tomatoes dead or close to it. It's not a pretty sight.

As always our main focus is our garden. Even though I'm meant to be teaching Hubby orgonites, I've rationalised to myself that once the garden and the deck are organised the energy will be tons better ~ so it's worth this time and effort.

Here's how it looked before

47 days garden update

I had to google myself to find my BTC posts lol. I'm not sure but I reckon "47 days" could have been my last garden update ~ that or my calamansi tree guild post.

Anyway.. It's been a long long time since I gardened anything, even the bathroom kokedama plants are dead so to jump back in the way we have these couple of days is a little crazy.

As I typed that, I felt an ache from my hands so sore and wrecked, reminding me of the hard work we've put in.

Monday : What we had to work with

This was the sad sad state of the garden on Monday.

After much research earlier this year I decided to try companion planting, opting for a long veggie garden along the fence.

In terms of pests/insects, they ended up being the least of my worries. It was the local birds and wildlife that really caused the damage so close companion planting (how I had it before) is not so important this time around.

This time, it's enough for me that the companions are close by. This time I'm focused on protecting against birds without driving them away.

But first....

The clear up

Hubby was contemplating on the wonky brick border on Monday. I joined him and we stood on the side, just looking at the huge bend on the retaining wall/fence thinking it don't matter how spot on straight this line is, that bow on the fence is letting the line down. I figured why not embrace the wonky and go with round garden beds this way we might noticed the bend less?

Either way it still works out and it's still our best choice for now. All the beds being round means we can buy chicken wire rolls and use them to protect our crops from all the wildlife.

I also really like how the curves add personality to the yard. Imho it's way better than the old set up and as usual I drew up a new plan for the garden which I will post tomorrow!

Yup. I just did that. I'm amazed I even managed to type this much tonight. It's like my hand's dying wish was to type up one... last... blog...

And with that, I shall continue this tomorrow! Come back and see what the plan is and what we've done so far.

Good Night Steemit!

Hi @bearone, nice post, I need to know more about the close companion planting to protect against birds, please tell me more. (I planted some strawberries, but the birds get to eat them)

Hey @ bearone, you're doing a great job cleaning up and restarting the garden, I know how hard it is to get motivated! I pick the survivors and mostly grow them now, they like the environment and don't need much care!
