Black Thumb Chronicles : Raised Garden Beds

This was us on Sunday.

Yeh I know, a tad late but there's been other things on my mind lately but now that I'm a new member of @naturalmedicine and we been talking garden and plants today I really wanted to write this quick blog so I can pave the way for tomorrow's post.

With the grow house done the garden beds is the next step towards self sustainable glory.

We decided to go with the Birdie brand, aussie company off the back of this guy's recommendation on YouTube.

According to him they're meant to last practically forever. I'm actually glad we did the bed research first because we were either going to go with timber beds or the organic gardening co brand and neither was a good option for us because we wanted something that will last for a long time with no problems.

To start off with we got 3 40cm high beds in 'Merino' along with a couple of kiddie garden beds (which we didn't end up keeping because they were on the shifty side.)

I put up a shade cloth on the clothes line and set up my supervisor seat to oversee construction.

And before I knew it Hubby had all 3 beds made and in the grow house.

Thoughts on the beds....

  1. They are really great quality! The material was solid and they also had a plastic sheet to protect the sides from scratches.

  2. Assembly was also straight forward (from what I saw anyway) and he really did put the beds together very quickly.

  3. The height is great for us short folks. Though in saying that my sore knee would probably prefer the taller beds so I didn't need to get down and bend a knee. I still like it though. I think if we had the taller ones they would be too imposing in the grow house.

The only problem now is figuring out where to put the beds and the sunlight/shade situation, plus which plants to grow where.

I got stuck on that today and decided to sort my succulents area out and plant some seedlings instead.

All that on tomorrows BTC 👩‍🌾.

Hope ya'll had a great Tuesday!!

Sort:

Vegies need six hours of sunlight (not sure where I got that from!) so that's a factor. How exciting for you! Is the cage to keep roos out - I guess it would be, if you're in the Blue Mountains! We've got a heap of cockies starting to eye off our garden and they stole all our quinces the other day. The parrots loved our nectarines. So far we've been safe from marsupials though!

Ohh that's handy to know. I'm pretty sure that whole space gets about that at least. The question is once the plants are grown will it give shade to the other plants preventing those plants from getting their 6 hours? 🤔 dilemma 😪

The cage is for all the birds and possums. They eat all our produce before we can get to them. As it is we dare not leave any orangey tomatoes on the vines cos the possums will grab them 😭

The parrots have a go too but they seemed to enjoy my succulents a few weeks ago. I was not happy...

yep, but you just figure that out when you plant stuff! Just figure out the angle of the sun and how big the plants will grow. xx

bloody birds bloody possums!! I have a problem with blackbirds messing around with my mulch - shakes fist at sky...

I'm thinking tall growers and vines at the back, short plants at the front? I should just watch our garden cam and watch the sun/shadow, or just do what Nate said and just plant something lol

The possums I loathe (mongrels!!! 😒) the birds kinda help out with seed spreading ~ sometimes... Either way they're both terrible free loaders, especially when there's bush land all around us!

Yes to garden cam.. as what if it's the other way around?
