Many of us are guilty of using this favorite four letter word. So why not find out where it originated?

The word generally refers to the act of sexual intercourse, and is also used as a word for frustration, or disdain.

Originating from the English language, it is well known in many countries of different languages.
Just by its sound it can describe pain, pleasure, hate and love. It is one of the only words in the English language that can form a grammatically complete, stand alone sentence.

The earliest written trace of the word was from a manuscript in the year 1528 called "Cicero's De Officiis" and the word is only featured
by a monks written notes on the margin of the manuscript. It is the first documented time in its adjective form. In the margin notes it say's "fuckin Abbot". It's assumed to be a word of disdain written by the monk.

The Oxford dictionary states: The origin is
from Early 16th century: of Germanic origin (compare Swedish dialect focka and Dutch dialect fokkelen); possibly from an Indo-European root meaning ‘strike’, shared by Latin pugnus ‘fist’. The word for the next few centuries was simply a direct and increasingly impolite word for sexual intercourse.

Only in the early to mid-nineteenth century did the word begin to be used non-literally. An example of this transition : It went “he fucked her” to “that’s fucking awesome!”
