After noticing this same response every time I introduce people to steemit.com I decided to ask
What's your first impression?

Recognising the skepticism I quickly explained this is not the kind of money most people make, those users have been here a long time earning their audience as well as their stake in the platform which gives them the power to get to the front page . . . A short explanation of steem power later and . . .
So it's actually advertising then...
