Coaching - How to Be Coacheservative
How many of us know how to be Coachable? Very few! You might be doing things right but your Coaching styles are either unreachable or fixed. Are you fixing the problems of your clients or are you creating them?
First, we must differentiate between what a coach is and what a mentor is. A coach is someone who is professionally trained to encourage and help people reach their full potential. A coach can guide people in their own development by providing a structure and a system for their success. A mentor is someone who has achieved personal development and is best known as a "mentor." Mentors can provide leadership, expertise, and inspiration. They do not hold a professional status like a coach.
So, how can you be athlete coachable? You have to identify your problem areas. Next, you need to set yourself goals and develop a plan to address those problems. And third, you need to have a growth mindset. This means that you will be constantly looking for new strategies, new methods, and new systems that you can apply to your client's situations to get them from point A to point B.
To be coachable, you must first identify the fact that you do not know everything and that you don't know how to help your clients understand their situation better. Second, you need to set your boundaries and understand the difference between coaching and mentoring. Third, you need to have a growth mindset and believe that you can coach an athlete or a star athlete. Fourth, you need to be able to coach athletes effectively without having to become one.
How do I learn to be coachable? The first step is to become self-aware. Pay attention to your behaviors and your reactions to people around you. Are you being coachable? If not, you may need to adjust your behavior in order to be more coachable.
How do I learn to be coachable? The second step is to put your limitations aside and take long, hard looks at your situation. While this might sound counterintuitive, if you look at your situation objectively and ask yourself if you really know what is going on and if you can do something about it, you will see that there are some limitations to what you can do and that you don't really know how to help your clients solve their problems. You need to shift your mindset from "I can't do that" to "I can and will do that". Once you have made this shift, you are now ready to be coachable.
Is being coachable something that you can just do on your own? No, not at all. Some people are born with a special gift and are able to reach goals that others may find completely unachievable. Other people just aren't born with the ability to be a great coach. For those people, it is important to get an education, either through an apprenticeship or by attending seminars to better understand what makes someone coachable and to figure out how they can improve their coaching skills.
So what does being coachable mean for you? It means that you have some limitations. You are willing to be flexible so that you can reach your goals. You are willing to think outside the box so that you can give your clients more than the usual solution. Being coachable is a lifelong journey and while some of the requirements may change from year to year, the basics will always remain the same. By following these 13 steps, you can become a coachable athlete!
