Teleskop pertama kali diciptakan dengan dua lensa di dalam tabung yang terbuat dari kayu. Teleskop pertama ini dibuat oleh Hans Lippershey pada 1608 dan diberi nama ”The Dutch Perspective Glass“. Teropong bintang yang diciptakan ini kabarnya hanya mampu melakukan tiga kali pembesaran. Teleskop karya Lippershey sekaligus mengonfirmasi bahwa ia sebagai penemu teleskop pertama, namun penyempurnaan dilakukan oleh Galileo Galilei.
