Jamu - Indonesia's Liquid Gold

in #travel7 years ago

Indonesia is a land known for many wonders, and one of my favorites would definitely be the traditional herbal medicinal drink called Jamu !

Jamu (jah - moo) is made throughout Indonesia and can vary in composition , generally the main ingredients will utilize Turmeric , Ginger , & Kencur (ken-chur) . Various ingredients can be added for taste and optimal absorption - such as black pepper, which is the ingredient that allows for maximum absorption of curcumin - one of turmeric's active ingredients .

The benefits of Jamu are many ; Some of these include anti-bacterial properties, anti-viral, anti- cancer, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant .

Why are these important ? We are constantly damaging our cells and bodies via pollution, chemicals, foods, outside forces as well as internal forces . With high potency herbs and foods we can build our immune system to be able to handle these stressors rather than falling victim to them . As medicine we can also use concoctions such as Jamu to treat infections and disease .

I rely on Jamu because I train my body daily and the anti-inflammatory properties calm my muscles and provide a general feeling of well being . It is also great for digestion/gut health which is one of the main centers that we need to maintain for a strong immune system .
In 2016 I had a motorbike accident in which I slid on the pavement with mostly bare skin which left me with 5 large open wounds that measures 4-6 inches . I treated the wounds with alcohol and betadine (iodine) to dry, and for the first few days layered coconut oil and turmeric powder which quickly scabbed over the wounds and I was healed in two weeks with the skin completely grown back and scabs gone . I also managed to walk away from this without infection. Quite a feet when living in a tropical climate such as Bali !

Thanks to @Soulhappyness02 ( Sehati Herbal Drink : www.instagram.com/sehati_herbal_drink/ ) in collaboration with Learn with Locals ( www.instagram.com/learnwithlocals/ ) and Katamama Hotel ( www.instagram.com/katamama_hotel/ - Seminyak, Bali ) I was able to participate in Jamu Workshop where we learned about the traditional usage of Jamu, benefits, and how to make your own at home.

This workshop was led by @Soulhappyness02 from Sehati Herbal Drink , whose mission it is to preserve the culture and tradition of Jamu as well as to provide a tasty way for others to take in the benefits of Jamu . It is a return to the "roots" (pun kind of ??? lol!) and going back to basics of happiness and health rather than relying on the western approach of chemically treating symptoms of various ailments/ disease .

Visit SEHATI HERBAL DRINK while in Ubud, Bali ( Jalan Sandat, adjacent Nike Store in Ubud City Center ) and try the assortment of healing tonics . Inquire for workshops, etc., with them also !

Come to Bali and get involved with LEARN WITH LOCALS ( www.instagram.com/learnwithlocals/ ) , where you can take away valuable skills from craftspeople and local artisans . I think the best way to experience Bali is to involve yourself and take away some nice knowledge and co-create during the process .

KATAMAMA is a beautiful hotel located at Potato Head Beach - check out their restaurant and enjoy the Colosseum Inspired Structure at Potato Head . ( www.katamama.com )
