Mushroom Cloud
I saw this yesterday near York South Carolina at the Catawba River. Notice the eerie mushroom cloud of steam rising upward.
I’ve heard this steam that is often like this in the morning hours is harmless. It makes me nervous! They have signs along the roads suggesting emergency evacuation routes.
According to Wikipedia there has only been one incident on May15, 2013 at Catawba Nuclear Station, York SC, “More than 100 gallons of water contaminated with radioactive tritium was released.” They also cite “In 2010, the NRC estimated the risk each year of an earthquake intense enough to cause core damage to the reactor at Catawba was 1 in 27,027” I guess those are good odds. More than 213,000 people live within ten miles of the station.
I realize nothing is risk free but I can only conclude that I couldn’t live there.
Is this from a nuclear reactor? What is the source of this strange observance?
