Socialism is not social programs.
The true definition of socialism is State ownership of the means of producing goods and services.
(Yes, I know the propagandistic revisions of it, but feel free to repeat them below)
Social Security is not socialism, welfare is not socialism, even Obamacare is not socialism. The state building roads is not socialism, and the state and various organizations helping during an emergency is not socialism.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
Saying those things is literally a way of blunting the meaning of the word, so that you or your sister in Wyoming thinks that socialism isn't that bad. After all, everyone wants to help the poor. By mangling the meaning of words, we can be tricked into voting for looter politicians to take over everything and make literal serfs out of us.
It's almost already done.
We are at the point of not being able to take it back. A few more riots with maybe a few more staged deaths, and people will vote in the same kind of people that "Nationalized" all the industry in Venezuela and blew the money without making any repairs or setting aside anything for upgrades. Starvation and riots follow. Real socialism killed 100 million people, mostly by starvation. I was alive for some of that, what your teacher may have told you is false.
And it starts with silly comments like the one refuted completely by this video about the Hurricane rescue efforts.
The term you are looking for is hijacking words
George Orwell wrote a cautionary tale about that very thing. The title was 1984...the democrats are using it as an instruction manual

Yes, I have read it, maybe 10 times, and watched the great movie twice this year. It's been on Comet all month. But I don't think he used the term hijack. Anyway, I like to craft my own phrases.
Socialism is one of many covers for Authoritarianism which is a cover for rapacious looters.

In my opinion, socialism is the dream of those who could not normally settle down in our lives. There are of course also loafers wishing for socialism, but most of the non-lucky people are still just not lucky, no matter how hard they try :)
What they call socialism is just the bait set by Socialists.
