Hello everyone, how are you doing, I hope everyone is doing great, I welcome you to week 4 season 6 of the engagement challenge, and here I shall be participating in the contest discussion of "Internet of Things and the Blockchain".

On this topic, I shall discuss the evolution of the Internet Of Things otherwise known as IoT, which explains how the internet corresponds to the Impacts of blockchains, Happy Reading!!.

Explain in your own words, what is IoT?

IoT is an abbreviation for the word Internet of Things, and this is conjoined with the word "Internet" and "Things", these are two different applications conjoined together to work in a space to serve as an easy application for human purposes.

The Internet is the global network, it is the Outerspace that interconnects the world together, with the internet, we can get varieties of information from the web and this is done provided we are connected from a mobile device or a computer.

Things could be any object that serves a purpose on its own, then there came an evolution where some geeks think about how to make these valuable things connected to the internet and make life easier for human services.

The Internet Of Things came in as an evolution of the internet, it serves the purpose of putting our home applications control in the use of the internet, which makes the control easier, the expansion of the internet is to solving world problems and bringing more convenience to human existence.

Through the internet of things, there have been several projects have become possible, for instance, we now have Smart homes, Smart homes are homes application service that is connected to the internet, this can detect the usage of human activity, the word Smart comes from the Internet, as anything that can connect to and fro of the internet is regarded as Smart, such as we have Smart TV, Smart Phones, Smart Fridges, and others.

All these possibilities came into existence through the IoT, and the basic use of this is to make life easier and makes the impossible possible with the use of some high-technology sensors.

My Experience with IoT:

Another application of IoT is a project I did some years ago where I incorporated Ultrasonic sensors which are used to detect the distance and measurement of an object, I coupled this sensor with another internet sensor known as SIM800, The SIM800 sensor is a correspondence that sends me the measurement feedback of the object I'm getting from the Ultrasonic sensor, then I could notify the irrigation process to water the environment or not, and this is one of the great importance of IoT in our daily life.

What impact does the blockchain have on the Internet of Things?

IoT devices play a major role in Blockchain technology, corresponding with Smart contracts and clarifying network nodes on a server for entrusting credibility.

Decentralization is one of the major parts of Blockchain, and the IoT Devices enable the internet to send data to the private blockchain in as to allow the sharing of record transactions.

The Impacts of IoT in blockchain bring the possibility of a central server, in which in this case, transactions can be verified from the major network nodes to prevent disputes and enable more trust in the captured data of the networks.

What benefits does blockchain offer to the Internet of Things?

As I had said earlier, the IoT plays a major vital role in creating credibility and trust between nodes of a blockchain network, and here are the following benefits IoT has to offer to blockchains.

Building Trust - The IoT is responsible for building trust within the blockchain data, which is done in a sense whereby all the transactions are being recorded into a secure data block, and these blocks cannot be changed which in this sense builds more trust between the network nodes.

Creating Flexibility - The IoT in blockchain creates interoperable networks among the nodes, this creates more flexibility whereby in the sense that more networks can interoperate with each other easily through the use of IoT devices, and this tends to solve problems regarding blockchain interoperation.

Security - this is another benefit of the IoT-enabled devices to the blockchain, with the IoT, you can select the data to be managed and as well customize the data between clients.

Boost Efficiency - Another usage of IoT is that it boosts efficiency between networks, which with this, new businesses are easily created across the ecosystem, and the data are supplied through the IoT-enabled devices.

Yes, the blockchain could have functioned without IoT, but IoT adds more efficiency to the use of blockchain, by creating a more interoperable network and making data transactions easier and thus creating more trust.

Explain two applications of IoT and blockchain.

IoT and blockchain have created more usage to the environment, and since the blockchain technology operates on the open ledger, this makes records public and easy for the third party making it more convenient to continue the operation.

Maintenance Log Data - This is one of the applications of IoT and Blockchain, the IoT devices are used to track the safety of the machines and as well their maintenance can be tracked with the IoT devices.

The Blockchain thus provides the ledger for the operation and the result are publicly displayed, and in this case, third-party maintenance could monitor the blockchain to serve as a preventive measure and record the operation on the ledger, this makes it more convenient whereby a new engineer could keep up with the work since the record operation is in an open record and this can be shared with the government for easy verification as well.

Cargo Transportation - This is also another application of IoT and blockchain, overseas transportation could pose difficulties with varieties of good transportation from each country with several priorities.

IoT and Blockchain devices can be used to record and carry out the task instead of the excessive use of technology, whereby the IoT Blockchains can be used to store the temperatures, arrivals, and shipping status as they move, and this birth an immutable blockchain transaction whereby products can be moved quickly and efficiently.

Explain a blockchain project that relates to IoT.

Web 3 is fast approaching and taking over the basic web 2.0 we are all familiar with, Web 3.0 put the internet and Blockchain together in a system, and there are several projects of Web 3.0 that have come into existence in our daily usage of the Internet of Things, one of the example if the IOTA project which I shall be illustrating below.

Image From IOTA homepage - iota

IOTA - IOTA is a cryptocurrency ledger technology that provides transactions and data protection for most IoT Industries, IOTA is a blockchain network and the initial usage is to execute transactions between machines and IoT devices, this is done through a decentralized network, as IOTA is a cryptocurrency network, and it's responsible for keeping the IoT devices record as well.

IOTA has been making huge development in the IoT, they are serving as a protection for transactions, and the transaction is added on a parallel network, the IOTA has its uniqueness as they confirm IoT devices transaction on a blockchain without the need for miner fee, the network uses the "tangle" architecture.

Conclusion

IoT is the evolution of the internet, and its purpose is to represent easier transactions and enable more trust between users and their day-to-day services, this poses to be more effective and interoperable with the use of Blockchain keeping the ledger open and adding more trust and credibility to users.

Thank you, everyone, for coming, and I hope you have a great day, I hereby invite @solexybaba, @josepha, and @Sahmie to participate in the contest as well.

IOTA is a good example of IoT based on Blockchain project. It is a Web3.0 project and their main goal is to provide verification of data and protects integrity. They are working hard to be at top in Web3.0 project.

As you have mentioned Maintenance Log Data, can it be possible that maintenance company can hide some records from government? and can public see the records as well or just the government?

well, there will be security layers for that, in the sense that the government bodies which need to access the information will get it provided for them without other bodies tampering with the proof, I believe it's the best.

I don't think such essential information should be visible to the public, so the government will be the only body accessing it.

Hope I got your question right?

I got my answer friend. Thank you for explaining it :)

IoT is one of the technology breakthrough we have seen in recent years as this innovation makes it easy for humans to control their properties remotely. This application is very common in smart homes when one can put on the lights, draw curtains and many others, remotely.

Building Trust - The IoT is responsible for building trust within the blockchain data, which is done in a sense whereby all the transactions are being recorded into a secure data block, and these blocks cannot be changed which in this sense builds more trust between the network nodes.

Yes, I also agree with this, the system becomes more trustworthy because data are verified through the peer-to-peer nodes which improves trust. Furthermore, the data are more secure because they are stored in the blocks which is immutable and that protects the data from hacking.
