Steemit needs diversity to grow!
We need to start looking at promoting more diverse content so Steemit is not just a niche site for crypto and steemit related posts. We have more talented people then just the ones that are being featured on the trending page every single day and its time to do something about it. The more people we can attract the more likely the value of steem will increase and remain viable long term.
Who would you like to see on the Trending page?
Do you think the trending page represents a valid view of the community as a whole?
Do you plan to buy steem and power up in the near future?
I would rather have the ability to subscribe and unsubscribe to certain topics like I can do on reddit. that way you would see see posts that interest you. I think this would lead to more vibrant subcultures. currently if a post was uploaded about speedrunning I'd likely miss it, but if I could sub my feed would be much more focused
That is an awesome idea, it would make it much easier to follow types of content you enjoy the most. I think the communities feature may help with this eventually once its released.
Communities feature? I will have to look it up. Is it something for HF20 or further down the line?
Not sure, its just been mentioned quite a bit
Yh i agree with you. But the early starters seems to be much more interested in crypto and everyone seems to follow suite. But i think its time for us all to look at the bigger picture and see how to go by it. I personnally adore @trafalgar post and also @elene2017 who all have different niche apart from the cryptos. Trafalgars post actually keep trending. We are on the right path though the journey seems to be far, we will get there
Trafalgar has enough Steem power to make sure anything posted from that account get noticed.
Well said. How many how-to-use-steemit posts and what-is-happening-to=bitcoin posts do we need? Especially crypto which is repeated all over the net anyway and is out of date so fast.
I would love to see more posts about gaming, photography and food on the trending page. Especially gaming would probably be a nice way to bring more new people in!
I am with you on the gaming content, I also think many of our great artists should be featured more. @mariandavp Comes to mind when I think of good artists creating original content.
Definitely! I'm kind of tired of the same, constant Steemit/crypto related content on Trending. It's just the same club of people upvoting each other and enjoying the bots and it really kills the diversity here. It doesn't represent all of the different content here at all.
It is pretty frustrating to see what only a few people like when we have thousands of users.
Yes it is :D
I'll have a post tmrw on gaming you can help get there (if you feel it deserves the attention), been working on it for a little over a week.
Anything in particular you are looking for from gaming related content? Maybe incorporating other themes like psychology into it? What do you feel current gaming content is lacking that stunts its growth?
Nice! I can't promise I'll see it scroll by though, so remind me if you don't forget :-)
We've got plenty of gamers here and quite a few talk about gaming. We do try to support each other a bit. It's just that none of them are big whales, so none get enough big attention to ever hit the Trending page. This is an issue for most topics here, sadly :-(
Well I finished the article, if you happen to have the time to see it you can check it out
I think contextualizing the game in a way that whales can relate to is important. I was chatting with one of them about it and they have experience with the game in particular, that's probably most of the equation.
Outside of that happen chance, broadening the scope to areas of say psychology can help make it relevant for a larger audience. That isn't my intention with the post I'm making tmrw, but it will be in the future. Perhaps rather than just game reviews in the classical sense, for Steemit I believe the format will need special considerations that a normal tech news site doesn't have to address.
Once it stops raining (108 days and counting), I'll start posting some Big Green Egg barbeque goodness.
That will be something different, that is for sure, lol
We have plenty of diversity here. The issue is the user interface and how horribly managed information is on the platform - how little control users have over content, search functionality, etc
We do have quite a bit of diversity, but its not being showcased
Which I'd argue is because of the interface obstructing access to it rather than the quality of content.
How do you suggest making it easier to access?
For content discovery, I think algorithms that learn your interests are the way to go. Right now sifting through granulated tags is a nightmare. It takes a long time, and so most people are only going to stick with most popular and trending.
The easiest way to do it is encourage more rewards for curating new diverse tags that end up gaining traction in the way you upvote posts that go viral.
But really the site needs a massive overhaul in many ways before it can support diverse content aggregation.
Even if they had all this those with the most steem power could still keep the same people trending. Only a few people with the most steem power dictate what content is trending. One vote worth $300 + seems to be keeping one person in particular always on top. The 1000 or so minnow votes do not do much in comparison.
Sure they dictate what content is trending but with better search algorithms and sorting it wouldn't be as big of a deal. I think eSteem is going to be a big problem solver in this space, you can check out the article I resteemed on it.
Yes, I read it and follow good-karma
This will be good news for mobile users
