Theme and Title; Writing! |

"My songs have always been frustrating themes, relationships that I've had. And now that I'm in love, I expect it to be really happy, or at least there won't be half as much anger as there was" -- Kurt Cobain

One of the questions that often arise in the training of authorship is, from where a writing to start. The question then develops into, when should a writer start a post. Often also comes the question, write the title first or wait until the writing is finished.

If an article depends on an idea, it means that a writing will not be born without an idea. Can not we write without a title? What about the mood?

Ideas are ideas. When it comes, it is a momentary instantaneous tug that must be fastened by writing it. The process of coming ideas can not be explained, as Archimedes discovered the law of volume, eureka! The idea came quickly, sometimes running away faster.

The writer from Indonesia, Kurnia Effendi, binds the idea by writing the title. Behind an early title-say so because it might change when editing-a story is saved. Keff--Kurnia Effendi's familiar nickname--can remember the story just by writing the title only. That's the way it might fit or even be unsuitable for adoption. Each author has a different way.

We can still write even if the idea does not exist. How to? When the idea dries, I usually force the idea to come to write anything that looks, thinks, feels, or smells. One word that flashed or a visible object I poured directly into the sentence and then into a paragraph. Ideas usually come by themselves. Indeed, one or two stuck and the idea did not come. If it were so, I let the writing and someday be resumed.

However, it's just to write fiction. To write an opinion, can not be so. We must determine the theme of what should be written, what reference is needed, what theory supports, and what data is needed, and how the solution is. Every opinion needs a solution. Many opinions are rejected by the editor because it only explains the problem, thrusting the case, but not solutive.

In the fictional world, I tend to free myself to write with all the themes and genres. I used to focus on teenage stories, and now more diverse. However, for my opinion focus for literary and cultural writings, elections and democracy, economics and business, as well as journalism. The choice is in accordance with educational background and professional career. However, the choice is still very wide.

The formula is, choose a theme that we master and if we like because it will make writing work into fun activities, such as hobby distribution. No one is paid when distributing hobbies, usually paying.

Title or writing first?

There is no standard formula. If it is comfortable with the title first, yes, please. If making the title later also not a problem. Clearly, the title should reflect the content. Some assume by writing the title first curb creativity. But there is also a consider if not write the title then the writing is not focused.

A several of guides in writing titles:

  1. For opinions, ideally 3-5 word titles. If it can be three words, it's better. Two words, originally in context, are also interesting.

  2. Look for a poetic title as well as full of meaning.

  3. Do not give priority to poetic but not connect with content.

  4. Make a play on a famous classic quote, or a play of legendary literary works. For example, Teuku Kemal Fasya once made the title of opinion "I Dissect Then I Am" which is a play on Aristotle's words, I think then I am (cogito, ergo sum). Others write creative opinion titles in Kompas (daily in Indoesia); "Waiting (Ang) Godot" for Anggodo's legal case when it disappeared. For those who like to read, must have heard the work of Nobel laureate Samuel Beckett, entitled "Waiting for Godot".

  5. Avoid creating clichéthical or sloganistic titles such as "Bridge Failure to Success" or "Life is a Struggle" or such a title.

  6. Do not have too many acronyms in the title. One common acronym, is enough. Acronyms that are too much just confuse the reader. Foreign readers who are studying Indonesian, often complain about the number of acronyms in language that are hard to find meaning in the dictionary. So, avoid as much as possible acronome.

Hopefully this post is quite helpful in writing.
