I and students of the Nusantara Module Group 3 Nahrasiyah program at Tsunami Museum in Banda Aceh.

Since it was inaugurated in February 2008, I have never been to the Tsunami Museum. It's not that I don't like museums. On the other hand, I really like museums and frequent museums. One museum even several times like the Cut Nyak Meutia museum in Pirak Mosque Village, Matangkuli District, North Aceh. When America visited the United States in 2012, I also visited several museums. Likewise in Kota Tua, Jakarta.

Unlike in Indonesia, museums in the United States are places that are popular and managed very neatly. Various museums exist in America, especially Washington DC, ranging from heavy museums to light museums such as the wine museum. There is an Indian museum whose building has no corners, there is a black museum under construction. Visitors can choose at will.

The Tsunami Museum, located near Blang Padang Square, Banda Aceh, was built to commemorate the devastating earthquake that occurred on December 26, 2004. Various sources say that around 200 thousand lives were lost in the most devastating disaster in the modern century.

It was the current Governor of West Java, Ridwan Kamil, who designed the Tsunami Museum with the theme "Rumoh Aceh as Escape Hill" which was inspired by the concept of building stilt houses which are characteristic of traditional Aceh houses. Now the building has become one of the tourist destinations in Aceh which is not found in other areas in Indonesia.

The Aceh Tsunami Museum is one of the activity locations for the second generation of the Nusantara Module, the Free Student Exchange Program (PMM). For the second time, I was chosen to be a lecturer in the Nusantara Module. If in the last odd semester PMM-1 took place in a bold manner due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this time it was held in an alluring way. There are 140 students participating in the Nusantara Module program at Malikussaleh University. Each group has 20 students.

Education for students

I organized an activity at the Tsunami Museum to provide education on disaster mitigation to 20 students from various universities in Java, North Maluku, South Sulawesi, and West Nusa Tenggara. We have 25 meetings divided into 14 Diversity Modules, 7 Reflection Modules, 3 Inspiration Modules, and 1 Social Contribution. But overall, we held up to 33 meetings and maybe even more because we have dance practice that we have to add.

To help with the assignment, I was assisted by a liaison officer (LO) among the students. I chose Khaira Lulvita alias Vita, a student at the Faculty of Law at Malikussaleh University.

We visited the Tsunami Museum on December 18, 2022, after returning from Sabang (I want to review Sabang too later). The end of the year is apparently not the right time to visit museums in Indonesia, maybe not even the right time for a vacation. It rained all day, hampering outdoor activities.

When we entered the museum, we already faced a problem. Visitors who have to buy an entry ticket must get wet because the museum manager does not provide umbrellas.

Inside the museum, a lot has changed compared to a few years ago. The water flowing from the entrance wall was no longer there. In fact, it gives a deep impression of the tsunami. But the atmosphere is indeed very heart-stirring with the sound of remembrance that sounds incessantly, still like when the earthquake and tsunami occurred on December 26, 2004.

According to visitors who have visited the museum several times, the short films shown are still the same as before. There should be the development from the results of the evaluation so that visitors don't get the same spectacle.

Digital creativity and technology

The screen displays several photos of the tsunami tragedy and a short film that is playing only focuses on events in Banda Aceh, Aceh Besar, and its surroundings. In fact, tsunamis are evenly distributed along the Indian Ocean. Some areas of Aceh have even gone abroad to recover. Visitors must also obtain photos and videos at other locations.

The disaster in Aceh invited many world celebrities to attend, such as footballer Christiano Ronaldo and the world's top actors. Unfortunately, there is no such information in the museum. In fact, it is interesting to mention the arrival of a number of important world figures—besides the UN Secretary-General—to show how the Aceh tsunami earthquake disaster has attracted the attention of important people around the world.

The portion on disaster mitigation education also needs to be added in each room by utilizing digital technology. The presence of digital technology is still lacking in the Tsunami Museum, even though it supports the educational capabilities of visitors.

I invite @abyousafzai,@asiahaiss,@shabbir86, and @neukyan to take part in this challenge by reviewing other topics such as books, music, films, and various tourist destinations. [@ayijufridar]

Museum Tsunami Aceh termasuk salah satu lokasi kegiatan Modul Nusantara program Pertukaran Mahasiswa Merdeka (PMM) angkatan kedua.

[@ayijufridar]
