BLACK PANTHER MOVIE REVIEW 1 - THE STATE OF WAKANDA ( CONTEST INSIDE)

in #movie-review6 years ago (edited)

“Wakanda Forever!”

I can easily say Black Panther is one of the best movies I’ve watched in ages. Maybe because I’m African, or maybe because I’m an anthropologist. Or maybe because it’s just damn good! I mean I’ve incorporated the Wakanda handshake into my lifestyle, much to the consternation of my neighbors and friends.

For those who don’t know:

Wakanda is a nation in Africa with the technological advancement to take over the world, yet they low-key live their life and portray themselves as third world countries to the rest of the world. The source of their technology is Vibranium, the strongest metal on earth, and it exists not only as a metal but a source of immense energy giving them power, in all sense of the word.

From my own perspective, Wakanda is the ideal state of Africa, if we were not so stifled by colonization and its effects. The perfect state. A country that was not conquered or colonized and thrives on its indigenous technology, which happens to surpass the rest of the world’s. Despite or should I say In spite of this great technological advancement, they still stick to their traditions faithfully and wholesomely. I mean, they even organize ritual combats to determine who becomes KING!

The movie took into cognizance the belief of Africans in the Supernatural without being voodoo-y, recognizing the importance of ancestors in the daily life and running of the state, and acknowledging the existence of a spiritual plane where the living can meet the dead, take instructions and in this case vent their anger on their lying ass fathers.
Quite frankly, the relationship among family in the movie reminded me of the relationship between myself and my brothers, in a way no other American movie I’ve watched has done. The teasing, the banter and even the cousin rivalry is very evident in the African way of life. The love of a mother for her first born son and the unitedness present among the Wakanda people to the extent that they were willing to let someone they did not like usurp the throne from an outsider who took the throne by force from the previous King.

Africans are a beautiful people, their culture and tradition exquisite in its execution. It breaks my heart as I wonder what we would have been without colonization and the influence of forceful cultural assimilation of western culture into our daily life. The troubles of Wakanda is what we face every day in Africa, especially Nigeria. Except we’re very corrupt, greedy, not united, possess self-destructive tendencies. I implore every Nigerian to watch this movie, and see what we could have become (minus the vibranium of course) without colonial influence. Even if we had no Vibranium, we had and still have other natural resources that can lift this nation out of acute poverty, strife, greed and self-persecution. To me, this movie is one of hope. One of strength. One of a better future if we can just get our shit together and go back to the old ways. We may be Human beings, but we are also African!
