Why do walruses have tusks?

Both male ang female walruses have sharp curving tusks up to i m (3 feet) long, These strong, elongated upper teeth have many uses. Walruses eat clams and other shellfish, and use their tusks to rake along the seabed tovfind food. The tusks are alsocuse as levers when walruses haul theirsl massive bodies up on to the ice. Long, curving tusks may and sex appeal when walruses are courting. The males also use theirs to gore their rivals when fighting contests to win female partners.
