How to submit a story

Story is interested in narrative of any shape and kind we can get onto the printed page. Surprise us with traditional and experimental forms of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. We love short fiction, but we love hermit-crab essays, hybrid forms, research, lists, and charts too. Issues are themed and double-sided and feature the best narratives that speak to that theme in whichever size, shape, or genre they come.The editors are not only interested in fiction and nonfiction, but also innovative, human stories in any shape or form, and from as diverse a population as possible—Korean mathematicians, Iraq war veteran narrative poetry, musical scores from young girls in Mississippi, or the narrative analytics of big data. (We are also very much interested in research, essays, and interviews about how stories work to define and complicate our world.) As poet Muriel Rukeyser wrote, "The universe is made of stories, not of atoms."
Submissions are welcome during submissions periods by mail or through Submittable below; print submissions must include a SASE. All submissions will be considered for online publication.

Guidelines
Submit work that fits the theme, but don't be afraid to think outside the box. We translate the theme quite loosely and hope you will surprise us with perspectives we hadn't considered. Send previously unpublished work, though we do like republishing work we love that speaks to the theme. Please let us know where and when the work first appeared in your cover letter. Simultaneous submissions are allowed, but please inform us promptly if your piece is accepted elsewhere. Multiple submissions are not accepted and will not be read or responded to; please wait until you receive a response from us before submitting again.
Stories and essays should be typed, double-spaced, and paginated, with your name, address, phone number, and e-mail address on the first page, title on subsequent pages. We do not have a maximum word count for print issues, though do keep in mind that excessively long pieces will have to work extra hard to keep us excited.
Submissions for online issues should be a maximum of 2500 words, unless you can trick us into reading longer pieces.
Poems (up to 5 per submission) should be typed with your name, address, phone number, and e-mail address in the header on each page.
Interviews should be typed, double-spaced, and paginated, with your name, address, phone number, and e-mail address on the first page, title on subsequent pages.
For Postal Submissions, please include a SASE and specify genre in header on each page of submitted work. (fiction, nonfiction, poetry, review, or interview).
