It is an emotion, but we cannot easily arrest our emotions and challenge them or change them. Some specialists think about depression as starting with a set of beliefs and resulting in a pattern or a way of thinking that is like a spiral going downward. With the right help, it is not as hard as you think it is, to begin to master a positive way of thinking, feeling and living. I suggest you seek a registered counsellor at your school, college or approach your doctor for a referral. Good luck and Godspeed.
