Normalmente cuando miramos fotografías de un desierto nos imaginamos un lugar sin agua y poca vida vegetal y animal, y es que sin duda, en esas duras condiciones es mucho más difícil la subsistencia para cualquier especie.

Normally when we look at photographs of a desert we imagine a place without water and little plant and animal life, and without a doubt, in these harsh conditions subsistence is much more difficult for any species.

Sin embargo, a veces pasamos por alto que en estos inhóspitos parajes también existe un amplio ecosistema que nos puede sorprender, tanto por su variedad como por su belleza.

However, sometimes we overlook that in these inhospitable places there is also a wide ecosystem that can surprise us, both for its variety and for its beauty.

Esa fue la impresión que tuve al visitar la Reserva Ecológica de Montecaro en la Península de Paraguaná, un sitio para caminar despacio y atento si estás dispuesto a apreciar entre inmensos cactus y cujíes centenarios, la colorida y escurridiza fauna silvestre que habita en ese lugar.

That was the impression I had when visiting the Montecaro Ecological Reserve on the Paraguaná Peninsula, a place to walk slowly and attentively if you are willing to appreciate among the immense cacti and ancient cujíes, the colorful and elusive wildlife that inhabits that place.

Los animales que más llamaron mi atención, por su particular belleza y colorido, fueron la tarántula azul y la lagartija azul, ambas especies endémicas de la península.

The animals that most caught my attention, due to their particular beauty and color, were the blue tarantula and the blue lizard, both endemic species on the peninsula.
