My pleasure to be in such wonderful contest hosted by @fannyescobar based on the topic, “Let’s talk about Languages.” Language is indeed one of the most complex gifts that unites people from different corners of the world and, therefore, broadens perspectives. As much as I am looking forward to participating in this contest, I am equally happy to express myself and what I have evolved over learning languages, the significance of being a polyglot and how the languages have been pivotal in my life. This is a wonderful opportunity to ponder on the part languages take in the perception of the world as well as the wonderful world of multilingualism.

In Bangladesh, there is only one official language: Bangla or Bengali reflecting enormous linguistic heritage of the country. But it important to note that the linguistic geography of the country is a topic of interest given that there are many ethnic groups within the country and hence they speak in different languages. In addition to Bangla, there are Chattagram, Sylhet or Rohinbgia, and the regional tribal languages including Chakma, Garo and Santali, etc. are used by different community in the country. This multilingualism explains how many language structures exist in Bangladesh apart from Bengali language as a true revelation of the cultural diversity of the country.

Would you like to learn another language, which one and why?

Yes, it would be of my interest to learn another language. While English is one of the second languages of the Bangladesh I would like to know more different languages such as French, Spanish or Korean. In my opinion, to be able to learn a new language is useful for me as it will be useful to expand the understanding of different cultures, to increase the number of options for the further formation of my career, and improve the quality of my life. No matter if the person wants it for business or travel or personal enrichment learning a new language would definitely be profitable and rewarding.

In your family, or do you have any friends who speak another language?

Basically, in my family, people speak primarily Bangla, but there are some variations as well. My niece lives in Korea now and she speaks Korean very well, so I have attempted to learn some Korean from her. More over I have a friend who is an Indian and he speaks Hindi very fluently. I also learned Hindi so we can have an easy time with the language and communicate well. It is amazing how such two different languages let us relate with the various cultures and enhance our communication.

Yes, absolutely. Thus it can be argued that it is necessary to know other languages mainly in organizations where employees often have to move or be transferred to different parts of the country or even other countries. It also equally increases the chances of finding job opportunities across the globe because of the fluency in several languages. It enables access to new cultures and ways of thinking and enables people to move better in new roles or places. The major factor that make people to learn other languages apart from their native languages is that the world has become a global village and possessing more than one language is an added advantage.

What have you done to learn to say words in another language?

In order to learn another language, I felt the need to take the following basic measures. As a first step I have combined watching the films and television programs in that language with subtitles so that I can learn the frequently used phrases and the intonation. I have also utilized language learning applications and websites that help in mastering simple words as well as basic structures of the language. Also, I have attempted to talk to the native speaking persons from as often as I can, for instance, talking to my niece in Korean and to my friend in Hindi. All these have helped me to learn new language in a more enjoyable and efficient way.

Altogether, languages lead to new opportunities to interact and learn about new cultures. We need to know and be able to speak more than one language because it improves our outlook and way of communicating with others.
