10 years ago: Filming with The Scaramanga Six

Time, my friends, moves fast. Too fast.
I've been looking back over my music video work - looking at some triumphs and quite a few more failures.
It's fun to see how many more bands crop up more than once and see how our work together evolves.
In this case, this video was the first thing I filmed with my good pals The Scaramanga Six for their song 'Back To School' and it was made 10 years ago.
The 'Six' are 'The band for Yorkshire that torture' and they play cinematic punk and evil pop.
They have had a career of over 25 years with 9 albums and continue to thrill with their imagination and vision.
You can hear ALL their music here for totally free. Then I recommend you buy their albums to support them.
(They’re self releasing through Wrath Records, an indie label they own and rely on fans to fund their amazing work.)
They have achieved cult status among many music fans and put on a live show that is unmatchable in character, emotion, volume and rock.
This video was shot in an old warehouse - we put up a black backdrop and used homemade camera tracking kit with PVC pipes and wooden deck to get that smooth motion camera look. I think it worked really well.
I was a big fan (and still am) of the high shutter speed look, so I used to enjoy cranking it nice and high.
After the performance shots we then later added some obscure narrative moments of a bizarre frankenstein like music portal which leads to an unsuspecting person building a replica receiving full aural assault from the menacing band.
I still enjoy the swagger and charm of the video, and I think it set us on a path of shooting stuff that was a little ahead of it's time in terms of what we were accomplishing on a small (to none, sometimes) budget.
This might have even been the first video we shot in HD too whilst transitioning from MiniDV tapes.
The song is ‘Back To School' is taken from their 2009 album 'Songs Of Prey' released through Wrath Records.
Enjoy.
Time certainly does move fast. The weeks just zip past me these days. The video is great, especially for being one of the first things you filmed with the group. Very well done. I've never heard of the term "evil pop" before. I'm not entirely sure what that means lolol. Sounds interesting though
