Avian influenza or Bird Flue

Avian influenza is an infection caused by Avian(Bird) influenza (flu) viruses. These influenza viruses occur naturally among birds. Wild birds naturally carry the viruses in their intestines. Although these wild birds are usually not affected by this virus,it is very contagious among domesticated and other birds. It may make them sick or even kill them.

How infection takes place

Birds become infected with avian influenza when they have direct contact with infected waterfowl or other infected poultry. They also be affected through contact with surfaces,such as dirt,cages or materials such as water, feed that have been contaminated with the virus.

Kinds of diseases in Domestic poultry

There are #Two kinds of diseases in domestic poultry caused by Bird flue Virus.
#1. # Low extremes of virulence: The "low pathogenic" form may go undetected and usually causes only mild symptoms such as ruffled feathers and drop in egg productions.
#2. # High extremes of virulence : The highly pathogenic form spreads more rapidly through flocks of poultry. This form may cause diaries that affects multiple internal organs and has a mortality rate that can reach 90%-100% often within 48 hours.

Effect of Avian Influenza on Humans

The risk fromm avian influenza is generally low to most people because the viruses do not usually infect human. However, confirmed cases of human infection from avian influenza infextion have been reported since 1997. Most cases of avian influenza infection in humans have resulted from contact with infected poultry. The spread of avian influenza viruses from one ill person to another has been reported very rarely. There are only three known subtypes of human influenza viruses. They are #N1N1, #N1N2, #N3N2 and #H5N1 virus. These occur mainly in birds.

Symptoms of avian influenza in humans
Symptoms of avian influenza in human have ranged from typical human influenza like symptoms to eye infections, pneumonia,severe respiratory diseases and severe and life-threatening complications. The symptoms of avian influenza may depend on which virus caused the infections.

Bird flue situation in Bangladesh

Recently, Bird flue has also spread its paw in Bangladesh in a beggar context. This is the result of intrusion of a large number of infected guest birds into our territory as well as import poultry from other countries. From November 2007, almost 16 lacs chickens and 20 lacs eggs of more than 500 poultry farms have been destryed. Howeever, it is a matter of hope that no human infection has yet been reported in our country.

Treatment & Medicine

No effective medicine has yet been produced to address the present birs flue disaster. Studies done in Laboratories suggest that some of the prescription medicines approved in the united states for human influenza viruses should work in treating avian influenza infection in human.
