My Very First Wood Cut!

I had gotten this piece of birch not too long ago with no idea of what I was going to do with it. All I knew was that I liked it, and I was sure I would find a use for it. Eventually I stumbled upon a post here on Steemit by marian0 titled "Carving a Woodpirit" and he gave me the idea to carve!

I started out by sanding the surface and then sketching directly onto the piece of wood in pencil.

After I had the pencil sketch how I wanted, I went overtop with a Sharpie pen so I could visualize more clearly how it would end up looking in the end.
And then I dove in with my tools and started carving! I outlined the edges first with the exacto-knife type blade, and then I would use the tools with the "V" and "U" shaped gouges and carve out the bulk with those.

I thought the prints turned out pretty decent, and the wood block itself also turned out looking pretty cool by itself!

Printing Process:

I used a pane of glass to dollop some printing ink onto and then began spreading it with the brayer. I rolled in all directions to make sure the ink was evenly spread over the brayer.

I then applied the ink to the wood block with the brayer, again going in all directions to ensure an even coat.

I carefully set the paper on top of the wood block and pressed down with a spoon to make sure it picked up all of the details.

Lastly I slowly peeled the paper up and boom, there I had a print!

Materials used:

  • Piece of birch wood
  • Pencil
  • Sharpie pen (fine tip)
  • 6 wood carving tools (I bought a cheap set from Hobby Lobby for about $5)
    • 2 angled blades
    • 2 small chisel types
    • "V" gouge
    • " U" gouge
  • Printing Ink (Speedball Brand)
  • Pane of glass (I used the glass out of a picture frame that I wasn't using) You could also substitute plexiglass
  • Large Spoon (to press the paper to the wood cut)
  • Multi Media Paper (Strathmore Brand) 9 in. x 11 in.

Wow, that's really impressive. I can only imagine the time and effort put into it. Would love to have one for my home!

Really? Thank you what a wonderful compliment! I'm going to print something like ten of these and put them up on my online shop I'm working on. I'll put a link in my bio when I'm finished with it :)

If you sell prints you should do limited editions, like 1/10, 3/10 etc etc. Traditionally, printmakers would make a certain number of prints and then destroy the matrix after, otherwise it's way harder to assign value to an artwork that you can make tons of copies of. I guess it's harder when your actual matrix is a really nice piece of wood and artwork in itself.
Looks good though! I forget that I can make prints even when I'm nowhere near a studio or press. Thanks for this :)

Sure! I've heard of that but it would be difficult to destroy the block of wood, so I was thinking after I was done making however many prints I decide on, I could encase it in a block of clear resin.

fantastic, i love wood cuts :) makes me think of old books

It kind of smells like old books too :)

thats a great art, would have required hours of patience and hard work..
A well deserved post for the curie.

Yes, lots of patience! By the time I was finished all fingers on my right hand right elbow were trashed. I think it was worth it though :)

Congrats.. just steem on

very nice print! did the wood emboss the paper at all?

I used multi media paper which is thick a lot like card stock. So it didn't emboss it, but I did use plain old computer paper for my test prints and there was quite a bit of embossing on that.

I cannot believe that someone can do such a nice thing with his hands! Always wanted to .. but my hands are not good at that)
And it's only your first try! Amazing ! I wish you inspiration in your art !)

Thank you! I think if I do something like this again I will try a lino cut. Much easier on the hands lol

amazing work !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you!!

thats so cool excellent post i like the details you provided with specifics

Thanks! I hope I didn't leave anything out!

Some may say he's wearing a cape,
Some will says it's just his back leg,
I like to think he's holstering a shotgun!

It's up for interpretation lol :)

That's incredible! Great job! :)

Thank you very much! :)
