Hong Kong: More than 10 beaches were closed after palm oil leaked to the sea following a collision between two ships

Clean-up efforts on the coast of Hong Kong, after dried palm oil drifted to beaches. Authorities closed more than 10 beaches, but stressed that oil is not dangerous.
Marina officials reported that the collision between the ships occurred on Thursday, but somehow the accident was reported to the relevant authorities only two days later.
The coarse oil is somewhat similar to clay blocks (attached pictures). The white blocks float in the water and cover the beaches.
The cleaning crews collected more than 50 tons from the beaches by Monday and filled 110 garbage bags on one beach only. The cleaning crews use helicopters and nine other ships to locate additional blocks floating deep in the water, away from the shore.
The use of palm oil is mainly used for food products and cosmetics.
The environmental representative reports that the dried oil is not toxic and there are currently no signs of damage to the fish in the marina. She adds that at most, 1,000 tons of oil leaked to the sea.
