Hello Steemit friends, today I am going to share with you a painting process of a fruit that I have painted for a drawing challenge hosted by @helene. The theme of the challenge was fruit so I have picked watermelon.

I was thinking about painting a banana but I thought It would be way too easy for a painting so I went with water melon.

So, here is the final image and below it, is the step by step painting process. :)

Step 1

First, I created a very basic line art of the water melon and filled it with green color. If you wonder why line art is so basic. This is because Line art is not important if you are painting as it is going to get removed by the end. Line art was there to be used as a guide for painting.

Step 2

After that I added a dark green pattern that every water melon has.

Step 3

I wasn't satisfied with the pattern because of the sharp spikey edges/borders so I changed it to something smoother.

Step 4

After that I added a highlight color (which was lighter than the base color) to give it a sense of depth.

Step 5

Then I added a dark color on the other side of the fruit for some shadows to make it a bit more three dimensional.

Step 6

Next, I painted over it to give it a textured look. It turned out alright for me and helped me eliminate the flat look.

Step 7

Finally, I added some major highlights and called it done.

Step 8

After finish painting the water melon, I started with the slice and used the same method for it: a basic line art with base colors.

Step 9

I painted the rind with the shades and tints of the same colors as I used for the watermelon in step 3 and step 4. I also added slight variations to the pink part and tried to achieve some textured effect.

Step 10

Then I added some strokes of darker shade of pink color to the watermelon flesh. I also added a slight highlight on the edges of the pink part.

Step 11

After that I painted seeds and added more darkness to the pink part to balance the colors. Also made slight changes to the rind and made it a bit darker.

Step 12

Finally, worked the melon texture and added the major shadows. Here is the result:

Wow. It's really a great piece @artlover I wanted to try it now because it looks so real. Can you tell me what did you use to paint? And how did you get that shimmery effect on step 7, on the top left side? The finished painting looks like a photograph. Thanks for sharing and well done 👍

Thanks for you nice comment @nomad17. I have used Photoshop and a pressure sensitive wacom tablet. For step 7 I used a regular round brush with a low opacity value. Give it a try. I would love to see your painting. :D

You are welcome @artlover I don't have photoshop so I have to try another way of doing it! Will update you once I do it. Cheers!

Oh god....this looks so.....cute and fresh and delicious and I want it on my tshirt.

tip! (sorry trying to get my voting power up)

Thank you @atopy! So glad to see your comment here. And thanks for the tip :)

Beautifull. That's a big talent you have. I'll follow you cause I'm looking forward seeing more of your work.

Thank you so much @carlschrijft for the comment and follow. I appreciate it :) Read your poem, loved it (followed). :)

Thank you. Glad you enjoyed my writing ;)

kick ass job I love that you showed process. very cool looks real

many thanks for your nice comment @barrysamways :D

I actually thought this was real. This is awesomeeeee

Thank you :)) Unfortunately, It didn't win. I really thought that it could take atleast third place but I guess It wasn't good enough. With due respect, I still am kinda disappointed by the artwork they placed third. There are so many better entries that could make it to the third. If I were to pick an artwork for third place I would have picked out of these: ( @oscarcc89, @aci7, @sweeti, @megii, @asechkina, @cookingpapa) But its all over and no more worries :D

They could've included your works to the placers. I mean this is nice y'know. Something new if you would say besides it even looks so real that I actually craved for watermelon. Hahaha. But anyway, that's okay @artlover you still did great and I know you did your best, who knows you'll be the winner next time. Just try and try and try and do your best! Fighting! :D

It's not even about why I didnt win as there are so many entries even better than mine. Despite they being so nicely painted they didn't make it to the third that that left me baffled as the current one is not that good for third. :D For me it's not about win or loss after all it is adding another good post to my blog haha ;D

Oh I see. I didn't read that contest so I haven't had the chance to view their works, but anyway something as such really do happen in contests since people vary in their perception of things. Hehe. :)

So much for that hahaha. This post of yours is awesome. Amazing. And very good haha. ^^ yaay! Next time could you make a painting of an orange? ^^

Yeah sure :D and I really need to work on my painting skills since I feel it very difficult to paint things. I am alright in sketching but my painting skills really suck. I take longer than usual to paint simple things. SO many things to master haha

You can do it, I believe. 'Cause you already have that talent in you. :) Fighting!

Great job! It looks quite realistic! Loved the process :)

Many thanks :))
