Underrated Movie Review: Idiocracy

To be honest Idiocracy does have a bit of a following but it is still one of the most underrated satires to be made in the last 20 years.

The film follows an average man who was frozen in a military experiment and wakes to find that, in the future, human intelligence as declined so greatly that he is now the smartest man in the world. He, being the smartest person in the world, is expected to solve problems that are far beyond his abilities, struggles to adapt to his new surroundings and ultimately, has a positive impact.

If that description sounds odd it is by design. The film is a satire written by (the underrated satirist) Mike Judge. As with many satires the story serves less as the purpose of the film and more as a vehicle with which flaws in our own society are ridiculed.

If you (like me) feel like our society is getting dumber by the day then this is the movie for you.

Idiocracy takes aim at many of the dumber aspects of our society. For example, Brawndo the Thirst Mutilator functions as a pretty good dig at the type of marketing that surrounds sport and energy drinks as well as the culture they promote.

The film is also strangely prophetic. The president (played by Terry Crews) is an extreme example of our tendency to elect under-qualified politicians based on their charismatic personalities. I won't get political but none can deny that this could be viewed as a prediction of the criticisms a politician like Trump now receives (whether you believe those criticisms are justified or not doesn't really matter).

I won't go on about the acting or the film making in Idiocracy because they are pretty average but that isn't the point. This film allows us to laugh at our flaws and shows us that they can be addressed at the same time.
