Close-up look at Taranaki Mountain!

in #travel8 years ago

Our son decided before we left New Zealand he would give us a chance to at least climb someway up Taranaki Mountain.

Taranaki is a volcanic mountain and sits south west on the north island of New Zealand. On maps it’s also called Egmount National Park.

Racing clouds!

On a clear day, you can leave home while there aren’t any clouds caressing the top of Taranaki.

And by the time you’ve driven only a few miles (say about 15-25 minutes) and you’ve reached the foothills of the volcanic mountain, the mountain is already shrouded in cloud. The clouds form that quickly.

So we took our chance!

And so parking the car at Dawson Falls tourist centre, we could count ourselves lucky, there was only a little cloud formation on the mountain top!

Following the Wilke Pools path:

Leaving the parking area, we walked up the concrete path you see this photo below:

It isn’t long before you’re in a forest.

It’s a rain forest because of the clouds and mist that generally surround the mountain.

When you walk up the pathway from the Dawson Falls Centre, you’re climbing higher and higher up the mountain side.

And alongside this pathway is a deep gully on your right side that contains a stream, running down its middle. You can’t see the actual stream from the pathway clearly because of the forest foliage obscures it somewhat.

The wonder of the forest:

With each twist of the pathway you are remaindered why New Zealand was used for the setting the Harry Potter films.

The moss covering and hanging from the twisted trunks and branches of the trees makes the whole scene look weird and scary with ferns growing in between the trees.

I stopped every now and then to rest and enjoy what was around me and soaked in its fascinating mysterious ambience.

Moreover:

Along the way, further up the mountain, we climbed wooden steps and walked over wooden gangways, which twisted and turned onto ever new scenes. It was like having a twist in a story, making the adventure more and more interesting.

And then suddenly…

We came out onto an open area. A gully with no trees, only up on either side of it.

The gully was filled with huge grey rocks and stones, with a small stream running and trickling down the middle, in between the rocks and harmoniously and smoothly over the smaller stones.

I loved it…

So much! A lovely place to stop and rest! That we didn’t carry on up some steep metal steps on the other side of it, onwards to the Wilkie Pools.

I scrambled over the rocks and stones taking photos from every angle I could find, that I thought would capture its dynamics.

I was surprised to see pampas grass growing so high up the mountain under such severe weather conditions. Here are some photos of the flora there.

And then also turned and took photos of the scene outwards, away from the mountain, just to show how high up we were. (The last one in the collage was actually taken later when we were going back to Dawson Fall centre).

Sitting down peacefully, you breathe in the beauty and majestic wonder of your surroundings.

My oil painting:

To devise this composition, I used a little artist’s licence to join both sides of the rocky gully into one scene. Hope you like it.

I know the composition seems a bit crowded and somewhat confusing at first glance, even though I did eliminate a few rocks.

  • But for all that, the mist and the mountain high up in the composition, gives the scene a dramatic touch, with it looking down the gully valley towards us.
  • What I like about the scene is the power of the sun shining out from behind the dark volcanic mountain top and the softness of the misty cloud, thus creating this dynamic enigmatic back lightening.
  • See how it subtly shines down, giving the foreground an eerie glow. Subtly darkening the mountainside somewhat subdues some of the busy details and highlights the power of the sunshine striking out from behind the mountain top.
  • We were so high up, that the blue of the sky is a deep blue. And that fact also helped to get that bright shining effect.

I absolutely love mt.taranaki! Have you ever flown over it? It baffles me to see what a perfect circle it is from above around its base perimeter!

It’s such a lovely sight to see the grey rock with a snow capped peak :) great photo you got before the clouds!

The forest in the surrounds is lovely, the green moss everywhere just makes it so very peaceful and interesting:) I love your painting by the way, as always!

I am always thrilled to see your posts... nz really holds the most special place in my heart and I always read these posts with a smile. It also gives me more motivation to discover more and end up back in nz one day:) keep on enjoying everything!

No we didn't fly over Taranaki. But like you, I also thought that the mountain park area made a perfect circle. And having traveled most of the way around that mountain, where it was possible by public road, I was really impressed by it's power it seemed to have over the surrounding countryside and the people that live there.

A few days before a friend of mine asked me whether I would choose a mountain life or a beach life.
And I answered mountain life obviously.
Then he asked the reason, I think there are thousands of reasons. You never get tired of mountains and what they have to offer.
Beautiful pictures though.
The oil painting looks lovely too.

Aaah, that two pronged question wasn't fair! Both mountains and beaches are great places to be. Well in my book anyway. You see I love painting mountains and river scenes, but... I love the moodiness of the sea. And of cause next to painting , I love swimming in the sea.

Whoa what a trek that was. Twists and adventures at every curve. It must have been enjoyable. The trek was long and filled with ferns and mosses. The view over the top is great. The grey rocks along with a small stream look wonderful. Well the view was really worth it after that tiring climb. Moreover that oil painting as usual was a class act. I really liked. This was a nice trip to be remembered after you leave New Zealand. Btw where are you goin?

The trip to New Zealand was about three years ago. We are back home in South Africa. The week after next's blog will be my last tribute to New Zealand. And after that I plan to take everyone through Kruger National Park, which is here in South Africa.

The last of the blogs from New Zealand must be pretty good and you will take lots of memories along. Have a safe journey to south Africa. Looking forward to your blogs from Africa. Really very excited. Dont know what it might turn out to be. The national park. Brillaint idea.

Taranaki mountain!! It is a great volcanic peak. Covered most of the time in clouds. The exceptional top view was great. Really loved it. Really nice thinking by your son making you climb to this wonder before you leave New Zealand. You ll take some memories along. The trek in the forest was good too. Ferns and mosses all over. They look spooky and that's the reason Harry potter is been made there. The painting at the last was good too. Authentic and looked a bit legitimate too. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for all the lovely remarks.
In all the oil paintings of New Zealand I have shown here on Steemit , have been close as possible to the real scenes, so you folks could have an artists view of New Zealand.
In my past art career, I also composed paintings with imaginative scenes. Working with gallery commissions, I had to do portraits and anything else customers required.

Amazing adventure!

Mount Taranaki
Rain Forest
Waterfall
Moss
Pampas Grass
Fog Thin,
and more ...

The objects I quoted above show an unspoiled natural charm with a life cycle for the ecosystem.

I think, this object is a great source of inspiration for artists like you @artguru!

The last picture looks like something straight out of a fantasy movie.

That's my oil painting!

Yeah, I read that

Thanks. But I think the original looks much better! The lightening is more effective.

Really a nice place and beautiful photographs , more enjoyed the rain forest where the mountain and the cloud mist that looking great, also enjoyed pampas grass and lastly liked your awesome oil painting that looks like a photography of rain forest. Thanks to share your lovely trip.
