Crazy Goals = Crazy Results!
This James Cameron interview on the Oprah Winfrey show got me thinking about goal setting and I wondered what the difference was between setting goals that were ridiculously high and goals that were not ridiculous. So, here's the deal: if you set your goals ridiculously high and it's clear they can't be reached, then ask yourself if that's a good way to live your life. Is it better to set lofty goals that will take a lot of time and effort to achieve than to set simple goals that can be reached with more or less effort? The answer is simple: It's always better to do something in a more simplified fashion.
If you set your goals ridiculously high, you are forced to work towards them every day. You may be able to motivate yourself to keep going to the gym or to get a new skill that you didn't know you could do before. But if you don't see the immediate results you were hoping for, it can be very tempting to give up. And if you give up, you have no choice but to get motivated to keep going - which is the whole point of goals.
How about if you set your goals ridiculously low? That's also a big mistake. If you want to lose 100 pounds in a year, then if you set your goals at that rate, you would probably be in the best physical shape of your life by now. If you ask the guy at the gym who is lifting iron, he'll tell you that you need to lift much heavier weights. And he'll be right.
So, here's the deal. If you are trying to get motivated, you want a crazy, outrageous goal. It's just that simple. If it seems crazy to you, chances are it's crazy for most people. So if you set your goal too high, you will only get frustrated and quit before you reach your goal.
If you want to reach your financial goals, then you want to set your goal to reach infinity. infinity isn't something that people like to imagine they can achieve. But when you reach an impossible goal, you feel like you've been hit by a car, or something. This is exactly what happened to me and I could barely believe it.
So when you set goals, don't do it too low. Because then you will get discouraged easily. And you won't want to do anything else to succeed. When you set goals that are too high, you will only get frustrated when you don't see any progress.
You can make sure you're reaching your goals, by using the same technique when you set your goal. It's called visualization, and it's one of the best ways to motivate yourself when you're not feeling very motivated. When you do this technique with your goals, you get the intense feeling of motivation every time.
When you set your goals too high, you will get discouraged easily. And once you stop trying, you will lose all hope. This is exactly what happened to me. So I never wanted to get another goal, ever again.
If you set your goals too low, you will become discouraged even more easily. If you set your goals too low, you will get bored easily. And then you have no drive to stick to the goal you just set! And that's the last thing you want - no motivation at all. So never make your goals ridiculously high. They are much better.
If you set your goals too high, you will feel like giving up. But how would you ever get motivated to do that? And once again, never make your goals ridiculously high! Instead, try to find a goal that is closer to your current skill level. If you can achieve that goal and work hard on it, that's much better than having a goal that requires a 4-year training program to achieve.
Why am I telling you all this? Because you should know that it doesn't matter which goal you choose. What matters is whether or not you take action in the proper moment. The only person who can determine that is you - so if you think about it for a moment, you will realize that an insane goal isn't going to help you attain anything - because you won't be able to achieve anything as crazy as you imagine.
