HappySunday#1 : About the Turtle in Aceh

The Acehnese people, Indonesia, are well aware that turtles are almost leaving them. Community activities that take turtle eggs for consumption and their shells for decoration make the sea turtle population alarming.

In fact, fishermen are also often wrong catch that resulted in the death of these animals. Currently, the number of turtles in Indonesia continues to decrease and is very worrying.

All parties must be involved to prevent turtles from becoming extinct. In Aceh, almost every Sunday, Turtles are nurtured in the coastal area of Lhoknga, Aceh. Once bred, then released into the sea.

This activity is usually done by some communities in Aceh. I have also been involved in the process of saving this turtle several times. Tourists who come to Aceh, also very enjoy this activity.

Indonesia is home to six species of turtles from seven species in the world today. Six types, we call it green turtle (Chelonia mydas), hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata), turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea), leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), flat turtle (Natator depressus), and sea turtle (Caretta caretta).

It's easy to find a turtle egg seller in Banda Aceh today. In fact, sea turtles are endangered and protected. Turtle rescue activists once said, from four turtle nesting beaches in Aceh Besar and Aceh Jaya that have been surveyed. Each season spawns an average of 12,500 eggs of hunting turtle eggs.

Sea turtle release activities in Aceh, every Sunday followed by students and the people of Aceh.
