ACTIVE VOLCANO - ETHIOPIA

Located in the inhospitable region of the Afar Depression in northeastern Ethiopia, an unusual source of light and heat emerges from the bowels of the Earth: the lava lake of the Erta Ale volcano. The Erta Ale is the most active volcano in Ethiopia, it is only 613 meters high, although its base reaches a diameter of almost 30 kilometers. At the top, two large craters emerge: one of them is an inactive well, the other, smaller, is one of the only four lava lakes in the world. Without a doubt, the best moments to visit the place and photograph are at night.

Commonly known as 'The Gate of Hell', the Erta has one of the longest and largest lava lakes on the planet. The land surrounding the volcano, one of the most hostile in the world, also contributes to that name.
The access to the crater of the volcano is done in 4x4 and on foot in a route that reaches almost 100 kilometers distance between the volcano and the nearest city, Mekele.
The result is a hostile place, of heat, red color and smell of sulfur. The crater is one kilometer in diameter and the lava lagoon is about 40 meters. It is possible to camp on the slope.

Despite the difficulties and dangers involved in this trip, the route to the crater of the Erta volcano is considered very dangerous due to the assault by terrorist groups and violent natives. It is recommended to be accompanied by security and by connoisseurs of the area. On December 3 last year, a tourist of German origin was killed, there is danger.
