Connectivity as part of Steemit experience

in #steemit9 years ago

There are some new users who see Steemit mostly as a blogging platform.

It can work, but at worst scenarios they are treating Steemit as a place where they just post their blogs and then do nothing else. No interaction outside their own posts, no reading other people, no discussion or commenting.

Sometimes the easy method of finding other people is either Steemit chat or the many different Discord groups on Steemit, like Minnow Support Project. However these are rarely enough and some users are only joining these to promote their own posts and asking for followers or upvotes.

Nobody really likes that.

The best thing on Steemit is the part of it being a social media. However it is somewhat different than most other sites, partially because of the UI which requires some time to get used to, combined with the difficulty to find preferred content for new users.

Putting some work and interacting brings the social dimension for Steemit users, which is almost as good as better than the rewards from posting. Especially at the start, when you're not really earning anything.

Steemit could need methods of being more easily approachable by new users, not only by bringing out the big earning posts on trending and hot pages. If new users are only trying to interact on a limited number of very popular posts, they will easily go unnoticed. Easier ways of finding other new users could be useful.

Finding more authors to follow?

One idea could be generating a list of random posts (maybe with certain criteria) being presented on each popular tag. This could help to bring up some posts without the few seconds they are visible in the "New" feed and could help minnows to get some visibility AND minnows could find some users easier to interact with.
The criteria could be picked, like above certain rep score to keep spammers of appearing on the list or within certain upvote amounts to have a control on how popular users get the visibility.

I'm not sure how well this would actually work, but I would be happy to find easier tools of finding authors and posts of specific kind, without them being trending or waiting on the "New" list.

I know one good method is looking into popular users posting on the specific tag and going through the comments section to see people really into the topic. However this method is not that easy for new users, but currently seems to be the best approach for finding less popular authors on certain topics.

And in the end.. What we do not need is "facebook level" of interactions, where people try to use the system features to attract masses of attention to their zero value posts by forcing "social activity" and trying to rip rewards for it. Like some people have been asking if we could get notifications for being tagged, but I'm sure it wouldn't end too well...

And no, please do not tag anyone.

Yes, I would love to see more pages than the hot, and trending pages. Maybe one that shows posts similar to what you follow or post. But right now I think the best way to get to know more people on Steemit is communities. One that I recently started posting in is #steemsilvergold which is a great community for Precious Metal related posts.

That could actually be great! There are plenty of sites with the style "People who enjoyed this also liked these". It could work with posts and authors, at least till some extent.

The communities are great. I've found far more people than I can manage to follow, read and upvote on the level I would like to but it has taken me a long while.

I'm also impressed there is also a community around precious metals on Steemit. It makes me happy even though I'm not that into precious metals :)

Oh, one more thing. There is one person you can tag to get them to upvote you, and that's @originalworks which I think is a pretty cool idea for a bot. I just found out about it today, and if you tag it it will make sure your post is original, and then give you an upvote.

Thanks, I think I was trying out originalworks when it originally started, but I'm too lazy to do that..

But I'm glad we can have something to "Tag *** who should upvote you!"
I know some new users are tagging random whales on their posts, assuming they can come and upvote their posts. It makes me sad.

The @OriginalWorks bot has determined this post by @apsu to be original material and upvoted it!

I talked to you on chat earlier, you gave me 2 up votes, all is appreciated, I resteemed this for other new members and adding you up to my follow list, I found minnow support also this morning, when my bw was down, and met some good people on there too :-)

That's really nice to hear, especially that you are finding good people :)

It's easier to find great people than success on Steemit, but after finding great people it's easier to be successful.

I think it's really good that you wrote about this issue. My suggestion is using AI to find good bloggers on Steemit, and filter spammers. Or maybe we should create a curator group who always look for new contents and upvotes good quality ones. But I think AI is our future, so it would be better option, don't you think so?

There are already curator groups, but I'm feeling I can't only rely on them. And another thing is how new users can find the good curator groups which curate content based on their interest?

AI could help in this one, but I'm not putting all my trust on AI on solving this. I would like to see newbie friendly UI for finding authors in their interest, but AI could help in this too.. somehow.

UI will be helpful, but I still give my vote on AI lol. I think those curator groups can't even find good content. They only help people who use Steemit Chat or Discord etc. I think ned (not tagging) should hire his own curator army and give them free Steem Power to vote. But it can lead Steem currency to go down.

What curator groups have you familiarized yourself with? One of the better ones I've seen is @OCD and I'd recommend to take a look if you haven't done it yet :)

I know OCD of course. But their standards must be so high. I used my experience on my posts and added tag for resteem from OCD team. But couldn't do it unfortunately. I think it's because I'm not native English speaker :( I think best way to get noticed is finding your own audience. That's what I'm trying as well, going good enough so far...

Well there are much good content and using a tag will sadly never ensure a "hit" by curation group :)

But you are right. No matter all curation andd all, finding your audience is the key. I wish I could have it easier to find contest that interests me, so I can be the audience.

I think I should start posting about niche category. I'm planning to post my traveling adventures soon as well. Will post lots of photos from different places. I hope I can get attention at least in that category.

Well hopefully you do :)
Success and attention is nice, but I hope you find your thing which brings you most visibility. It took me a while (A LONG WHILE) to find my own style but luckily I found it.

I'm sure you'll be there too in the end :)

Steemit is a nice community, I'm glad to be here. :) I spend most of my time here reading other people's posts and chatting on steemit.chat. :P
and thats the way AHA AHA. I like it. AHA AHA.

f4f?

No but I'm amazed that you have time to read posts after spending all that time on chat. Maybe all the time when you are muted..

f4f? hehe, I don't do f4f. that was sarcasm.
and I seriously have been spending most of my time on chat than making posts.
Hell, I haven't posted in like 22 days or so. too busy chatting and working.
I really love the chat.
and also I use "Selection reader" to narrate most text in the stories. :P

I know. I was doing double sarcasm.

You should try to be a guy who never posts but earns a ton with the comments ;) Here, let me help you on that.

Well hello friend... I is upvoting you.. I know you were waiting for me to get here and smash that button :)

Hey, don't twist the knife in the wound!

Or something similar, it's a saying in Finnish..

I guess i'm out of luck, since i'm so anti-social :(

So are quite many of us on Steemit, but we can pretend to be social to earn more money ;)

Without interaction no upvotes from others. People think twice whom the upvote, not to loose their upvote powers. Learned so much in this first month. Thank you for this article.

Happy you learned this much :P

How did you read my mind!!! Have you telepathic superpower??
I was thinking almost same things about new users here who are finding difficulties to get the post noticed, including me :) Steemit.chat or discord chat is also not helping. Everybody is posting link is post-promotion channels and leaving without reading others. The only think I find useful is commenting on others post and keep tracking who are interacting with us (me). In this way, getting upvotes in comments ( :) ) and someone returning back to our posts to read them.

Hey! Steemit chat not helping...? You are breaking my heart ;)

But yes, we need more tools to finding people to interact with. We can find people, but rarely people we want to interact with.

I agree with you that as a minnow I was kinda lost here and steemit.chat saved my ass (literally) a bit.

Also I want a page where the vote count counts!!! Not the $ value

Ha:D

Would you vote count to be counted in general or to bring up different posts and authors based on the amount of upvotes, not only the $ earned?
