A Weekend Essential Oil Retreat - Diving Deep Into the World of Plant Medicine (Part 4)
Hi everyone! I want to share my journies of an essential oil retreat that I recently attended in Oregon. The retreat was 5 days long at the beginning of June, and I am still swimming in the bliss of the oils. The retreat was held on land that Lucid University just acquired, close to Ashland. Lucid University described the weekend as follows:
Join Dr. Nick for an interactive learning experience taking place at the wild historic Trillium farm found in Southern Oregon at the height of summer's explosive boom. Get fully immersed with a beginner's course of essential oils, take plant walks through the wild hills and learn about some secret alchemical techniques in Essential Oil Wizardry's processes. Create your own customized blend and share your personalized blend with the group. Dive deep into the world of plant species and different extraction techniques - learn and apply the use of therapeutic essential oils into your day-to-day life. Enjoy some time with Ecstatic Dance playing games of scent, learn about essential oils and energy healing with Carter Lipnick, explore an impressive set of rare/exotic essential oils/absolutes/CO2 extracts and celebrate plants in a sacred plant ceremony.
How cool does that sound? I couldn't miss this opportunity to dive into alternative plant medicine. To be honest, I wasn't fully sure why I was going until the first night that we gathered in a circle and Dr. Nick said, "The essential oil is the soul of a plant". At that moment I thought to myself, "Ohhh, I understand why I'm here now - to have a deeper connection with the plants that I am growing and hope to one day provide to the community for their healing properties."
We spent the 5 days immersed in learning, playing, creating, and sitting in ceremony with these plant medicines. I want to share some of what I learned with you, and I hope that you may find this information valuable :-)

Therapeutics
- We spent much of our time learning about the therapeutic properties of essential oils. I was blown away at all the medicinal properties of each oil, and it really reaffirmed my belief that plants are the most powerful teachers and healers on this earth.
- Essential oils are extremely concentrated, and you need to use caution when ingesting them because the body cannot always take such concentrations - less is more! When in doubt about oral ingestion of an essential oil, consult a trained practitioner or be under a physician’s care
- Tea tree essential oil is a bug repellant, it stimulates the immune system by activating the white blood cells in the body, and is antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-fungal. Because of these properties, it is a great hand sanitizer. It is also great to use for athlete's foot and yeast infections (but use in a carrier oil and add moisturizing oil to topical location after, like sesame oil). A few drops can also be put in shampoo to use for dandruff.
- Red thyme essential oil is immune stimulating and is great to use in higher elevation. It is high in thymol. It is antibacterial and antiviral and it helps increase oxygen uptake. It can be irritating to the skin, so add it to a carrier oil at a rate of 2% essential oil.
- Vetiver essential oil helps ground one's self into their body. It balances the nervous system and is helpful in ceremonies when people are having a hard time. It also helps moisturize the skin and can be used to combat acne.

Therapeutics continued
- St John's Wort essential oil is a powerful skin healer. This essential oil has many health benefits, but it can also be very dangerous if taken internally. Do extensive research on this oil. It is good for the nervous system. It is well known as an anti-depressant. It should not be mixed with SRIs. It has a similar effect as MDMA.
- Spikenard essential oil comes from the root of the plant. It is often sourced from India. It is a great divination agent for protection. It aids with sleep and is grounding. It also increases cellular turnover, so it can be used to heal burns and cuts. It also helps with nerve damage by regenerating the nerves. A few drops can be applied to the bottom of the feet to relax.
- Carrot seed essential oil revitalizes the skin and is great for burns, and inflammation. It aids the digestive system, and a few drops can be applied to the lower abdomen area.
- Peppermint essential oil aids with focus and clarity. It can open up the lungs and throat. It is a digestive aid. It also aids in memory and focus. A few drops can be applied on the temples to heal a headache. It also has cooling properties.
- Pink pepper essential oil is a pain reliever. It can be added to a carrier oil and applied topically. It reduces inflammation. It also has pest repellant properties. It can get someone high if they vap it, with euphooric and sedating effects.
- Oregano essential oil is extremely antimicrobial, antiviral, and antifungal. Dr. Nick had an intense experience using oregano essential oil with a vape to heal a bad case of pneumonia, though he doesn't recommend ingesting or vaping for other people because the essential oil is so irritating.
Fun Methods of Use
On our third day, we played with vaping essential oils! We used a vaporizer that you can find here. 1 drop of an essential oil can typically provide 10-20 inhalations from the vaporizer. By vaping essential oils, you can effectively get the aromatic molecules into your bloodstream and experience the therapeutic benefits of the molecules. To heat up the oil without destroying the molecules from overheating, Dr. Nick recommends using a lighter and keeping the flame one inch away from the vial. The flame should be kept under the vial for 5-10 second while the vial is turned back and forth with the other hand.
We also dabbed essential oils! That was an intense and fun experience. We dabbed Dr. Nick's essential oil blend, ReSpire, which was formuated to open up the lungs.

Oh my gosh, yes! Natural plant based medicinal uses have gone back thousands of years. Last year, I was diagnosed with a horrifying, life changing, life altering, disease that is not curable. (Crohn's Disease). Traditional medicine was failing, left and right. In fact, I nearly did not make it. But, with determination and a lot of stubborn, I found a medical journal about a plant based herb. Ordered the herb and immediately started the dosage they recommended. I've been in remission ever since and believe strongly that without plant based herbs and essential oils I would not be here today.
I can only imagine what this retreat was like for you. All that knowledge, education and fun wrapped into an amazing adventure. Good for you! Keep learning and growing your apothecary. People for years to come will benefit from it.
And we have been practicing aromatherapy in the family lately! It's the alternative to any medicine!
Naturalist saved my life from a brown recluse spider bite. I wish more people would see that nature provides what we need.
