The island of Thassos in Grecia

in #photo7 years ago (edited)

Driving on her rocky shoulders a history of thousands of years and a landscape as if detached from stories with gods, Thassos island manages to be a year for magnet for tourists from all over the world. Romanians seem to love it especially because it is situated closer to their realm than other Greek islands, or maybe because here they are welcomed with dreamy beaches and excellent accommodation conditions at affordable rates for their pockets. Regardless of why they choose to plan a holiday here, once they arrive on this island, none of them regret the choice. On the contrary! I choose to come back and again, because the island of Thassos is full of impressive attractions, spectacular landscapes and, of course, stunning beaches that invite you to be a bit lazy on their sand.

Thassos Island, short presentation

The shores of Thassos Island are scattered by Aegean waters, located in the bay of Kavala, just 8 km from mainland Greece. On its territory you can discover many prehistoric ruins, memories of ancient and classical times, Christian basilicas built on the foundations of temple dedicated to the gods, and many picturesque villages that host traditional houses, impressive beaches and pine forests, fir trees and platans dating to shade and freshness. Of course, the olive gardens are all the way. All these landscape ingredients are blended harmoniously to give life to the "Emerald Island".

Thassos Limenas (Thassos Town)
Our trip begins in Thassos Limenas, the island's capital, also known as Thassos Town. The city is located between Evreokastro and Pachi's head, hosting numerous shops, restaurants, hotels and the island's official institutions. The city is mainly visited due to the archaeological ruins it hides, and its suburbs can be visited by the Acropolis, a structure dating back to the Byzantine era, but it shows influences from the time when Thassos was under Venetian rule. The panoramas captured here are superb, so you can plan a visit to this attraction, even if you are not the fan of archaeological ruins.

Thassos Town has an old center, which in ancient times was served by two ports, a military one, open only to military boats, and a commercial one, used for all commercial operations and open to the general public. Numerous ancient sculptures and ancient ruins have been discovered here, many of which are now home to the Louvre Museum. The most visited attractions of the ancient center are the Odeon Theater and the sanctuaries dedicated to Zeus and the Artemis Goddess. Currently, the city hosts the main harbor of the island and is the starting point for ferries to Keramoti port.
