Professional Portfolio Building - RiotGames Based Design - Trendar, The Nomad Merchant Day2

in #art7 years ago (edited)

Welcome to a different kind of post!

If you missed the first part, please take a look to it right Here! Don't miss the first part so you can follow the whole creative process that will guide us until the end!

Just to be clear, the main purpose of this project is to create an original character for portfolio based on Riot Games style, universe and lore. I will be following the whole pipeline and workflow of a professional concept designer and, hopefully soon, maybe even work for my fellow Riot.

(All the images are my own creation and so I own the rights of them)

Let's get started!

As the first step regarding to design I always choose (and in fact we all should choose it as first step) to work the shapes. But why?

Untitled-1.jpg

See, the shapes are very important when we talk about design. Let's assume for a moment that you are in a very dark place. You can see almost nothing. Yet you will struggle to find the shape of what is over there and find it out just to see if it's not something or someone threatening your life.

For instance, in this dar image from the right, you will struggle just a little bit, until you realize it is a telephone over a table. But wait a minute, that thing is just a shape, it can be anything else! How does this happen?

We, as humans, count with many different systems for our survival. One of them (and our primal) is our vision.

Yes, we are very VISUAL animals.

Actually if you put an eye on the way we speak, everything is regarding to our sight. "Corporate vision", "to picture things", "mission-vision".

Since we are not animals used to the dark it's natural to assume that we struggle to find things that may threat our lives in such conditions. This is why our eyes and processing of our perception evolved in such a way that the first thing we understand and perceive is the contour of something, its shape.

So we can agree that the shape of something is its primary stage of recognition, at least for we humans. And since we don't make art for cats or dogs... we are all covered!

Back to the art

The story and lore of this character was previously explained!. We already have the elements for developing an idea and this is exactly what we are about to do.

I developed these silhouettes in very fast way, almost painting all the same time. Adding and taking details that may just take the vision (again with the sight-human-language) of our design away.

Disclaimer: Something I am not going to show is the reference pack a set for this. I don't want to show the original artwork from Riot Games just to avoid some copyright, but still I want to give them the credit for that and leave written right here that I didn't use them in any other way than as reference in order to get the right proportions for this character.

I think there's not much more to describe here! This silhouette already seem to work to me. What about you?
Do you think it works? Do you FEEL it works? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Also feel free to check the third day of this blog.

Thanks a lot for your support and I see you in the next one!

I always try to listen to the ideas of my fellow followers to improve my posts and to give something back to the community... therefor: What would you like the next posts to be about? What should I talk about? What kind of painting? Would you like some tutorials about arts, about cooking? Maybe some fresh gaming broadcast? I would love to know!

Bye!

I'll be interested to see how this turns out. I'm co-founder of Leaguecraft so I might get you to do a compiled article at the end that recaps the process in a single post(with links to the various stage posts) with start to finish and major stages and we post it up on the facebook page with 500k fans with a shout out to riot to see if we can get their attention for you.

Thank you so much @mugsy7 ! I haven't heard about Leaguecraft until now, I got curious and checked your webpage (it was absolutely an insta-like). I would love to have such an opportunity once I finish with this.

In fact, this encourages me to do even better than before ! I will try to keep an update daily on this and to not let you down =D!

no worries take your time, I can't guarantee they'll see it but it's worth a shot
