We desperately need a vehicle, please help us choose
We were in the middle of moving houses when our car's breaks went out (luckily it wasn't a far move).
The mechanic says our old car had rip in the break line and is now junk.
It was too rusted underneath for them to work on, and they offered to scrap it for us for 80 bucks.
Could be a bad mechanic or just bad luck, I don't know.
Now we need another car quick so we can finish moving our stuff and get our lives back to normal.
But I don't know anything about cars, so I thought I should ask the community for help finding and choosing one.
Our first idea was just to get the cheapest used vehicle we could find, but after searching online I couldn't find much in the price range that we originally hoped for.
And after spending more time thinking about it, I realized that the cheapest cars might not last very long, and could easily turn into more hidden costs in the long run.
So now I don't know what to look for. Basically all I know is that my family would prefer an automatic instead of a stick shift.

If you don't care about brands in general, than search for a brand with cheap repair parts.
Mitsubishi parts for example are pretty expensive in my country. Buy a car that is affordable to maintain.

This thing is beautiful. How does the stress on the engine go from the roof? Blown many engines haha?
During my time at university I worked as a driver for Mercedes. I got the chance to drive all their models extensively and the one that impressed me the most was the GLK (yes I know, it's a surprise winner..):
The car overall is surprisingly great. It's big but not too big, you know where it ends, you have an amazing overview as driver, it's comfortable, not too much, not too little. I really liked driving around in it.
I should add that university/my job there ended around 8 years ago, so I am not up to date. That also goes for repair needs (back then the ML was notorious) and for the position of the sat-nav in the GLK, which was the only thing worth criticizing. But they should have fixed both in the meantime.
When you have picked out a few cars, I'd recommend you to go to a car rental and ask them how the cars perform (consumption, repair needs), because the users there treat them as if they can throw them away afterwards. 10k kilometers on a rental car is like 40k on a normal one that someone owns privately. Employees at car rentals always know what's going on with the cars.
3 more things:
One of Mercedes steering wheels drove me insane. Depending on how you prefer to hold the thing, you honk all the time. SOOOO annoying!
If they try to sell you an R class, refuse! Don't even take it for free. It's the most terrible cretin I've ever touched (and I did onces sit in a Renault Espace)
When they pick up the car for inspection: Give the driver a little tip or put some candy into the car. I loved it when a customer did that;-)
if possible choose a model with a timing chain and not a belt, upkeep is cheaper on the long run.
