Director of week #2: Bennett Miller

I'm obsessed with sports movies, I don't think I remember a single one that I didn't like, and that is because I love to see all the dramatic dynamics around a sports background story that allows us to see different nuances of struggle and overcoming that combine to create a great story. In fact, one of my favorite movies of all time is Moneyball because besides telling a story that I lived firsthand about my favorite sport, it also has dramatic elements that make it different, fun and extremely stressful.

Moneyball tells the story of a baseball team that changed the game forever, a baseball team that dared to do something different without caring about the criticisms in order to create a competitive team that could cross salary barriers in a sport that has become more and more a business than a sport. To give some context to those who are not familiar, at the end of each baseball season as in any other sport the general managers of each team have to find creative ways to make a competitive roster, for this they can use the money and sign players through large contracts, however not all teams are able to spend the same mountains of money that other teams spend, so they should use creativity to build a team that at least is contender in a league where many times money can buy you titles.

Well, with some context clear, the plot of this movie focuses on how the Oakland Athletics were able to put together a competitive team that challenged the league giants through something highly unexpected and that no one had used before, statistics management. Yes, in this movie we see how the general manager of the Athletics decided to bet on computerized analysis of statistics to find undervalued players who managed to give it an unexpected result and that led them to establish one of the largest winning streaks of all baseball. Throughout the film, we see how the Athletics staff dared to use a tool that few found effective to compete and to create a team of underdogs that proved that talent goes beyond how much you earn.

The plot, besides being fascinating because of the incredible details and real testimonies it offers, also succeeds in showing us the internal dynamics of a baseball team with money problems, a baseball team that through team chemistry and the motivation of a man who never stopped believing, became legends. The performances and details in this film are incredible because they transport us to a corporate and sporting atmosphere that we can rarely explore after all this film does not save anything and manages to expose all the details behind a baseball team.

The film is undoubtedly worthy of having been rewarded for the way in which its director manages to transform a real fact into something intense where each scene is full of tension between the characters before the fear of failure that often arose in the team. This movie doesn't have too many characters but it has key performances that make it great through the creation of a plot full of memorable moments, moments where we see the triumph in the face of adversity and the clamor of those who never trusted this team.

In short, this film, besides being made by one of the favorite directors, also includes the type of plots I like the most, so for me, this is a film that any lover of cinema and sport should see.
