A Cozy Fire On A Spring Wintry Day
April 8th and I'm still lighting the woodstove everyday. This is not out of the ordinary this early in the month. I do let it burn down in the afternoon and then fire it back up real early in the morning as it pretty darn cool in my cabin by then.
I'm getting some snow,sleet today. Not a big storm so that's the good in that. This is not unusual either this early in April.
I have an Eco Fan. Works great and it really does help circulate the the heat from the stove outward into the room. It's thermoelectric and perfect for Off-Grid.

Hi @annephilbrick that picture makes that fan look like it is spinning super fast! How is your dwindling wood supply doing? I am down to my last tank of propane for the year's heating and glad that the weather has been slowly getting nicer. :)
Hello...!!!!
@jacobpeacock
The fan does run pretty fast. The hotter the stove the faster it runs.
I am out of the firewood I cut and stacked for the Winter. I am now burning old wood that has fallen in the woods. It's seasoned enough to burn I just have to keep bringing some inside to dry off the dampness so it will burn better.
Pretty soon I will have to be refilling my small propane tanks once I stop burning wood and cannot use it to cook and heat water.
I'm sooooo glad the temperature is more user friendly for you...!!!!
:D
I had looked at those fans before @annephilbrick and wondered how fast they spun. Now it has me thinking about using them to drive a tiny wind turbine or something similar. You had mentioned something about generating power with them several months ago and if they spin that fast then perhaps somehow they could do it. Once I get a wood stove I will definitely wind up tinkering with the idea.
Yeah the temperatures have been nice here during the day and perhaps that last cold snap was the final one but I do not want to get too excited about it just yet because the weather is fickle this time of year.
Anyway I am glad you are staying warm and at least have some wood available to burn even if it requires 'getting some exercise' to gather it. I was burning a lot of wood here in an outdoor fire when I first got here and going out each day and gathering it was sort of miserable work because it was cold outside and the wood was always damp and dirty. At least your wood supply got you through the worst of the weather though and maybe an extra cord or two would have gotten you through Spring as well. Cheers and I hope you have a great day staying warm by the fire.
:-)
If you could find a good used eco fan or buy one. I'm thinking it could be used outside placed on and hot metal surface thats in the sun and it will spin. I've haven't tried it but I'm sure if I put it on the hood of my truck on a sunny day it will spin. Although it may get to hot ?. I will try it out when I hopefully get one of those days soon....!!!!!!!!!
I hope you get one (many) of those sunny days soon @annephilbrick! That is a really neat idea of putting it out in the sun. I keep picturing aiming one at my tiny wind turbine that is roughly the same size and seeing what happens. It would at least be a fun experiment especially if it were outside because it would basically be converting sunlight into wind then into electricity!
That looks really cozy! I can't believe you're still getting snow!
Hello..!! :-)
@goat-girlz
Very cozy....
These smaller storms are truly not unusual but it's not a big event and will melt fast.... !! I still have snow here. Mostly in the shaded areas.
Sometimes Winter wants to hang around a little longer :(
:D
@annephilbrick I could stare at a fire all day, some how it is soothing to me. That is a fancy wood stove, I like the fan, too. When my Dad moved us to Missouri the only heat we had was a wood stove, a fan would have been nice to have with it.
Hello...
@myjob
It a very old Fisher woodstove. I love it and works great. Another great thing about it is that it has lots of surface for putting pans and kettles on.
:D
@annephilbrick you reminded me of the pan of water my Dad kept on the wood stove. I think he also kept his coffee pot on it to keep warm.
