Information on Computer Studies for Pre-school - Gr 1

You are so clever to know how to switch on the computer and also play some games on it.  You know how to open a 'word document' and type your work or story on it.  Did you know that you need to 'save' your work before you close your document?

  • What will happen if you do not save the document?

That is correct - if you do not save it, it will not be on your computer the next time you want to use it, so whenever you want to keep a document, you need to know how to save it.

Have a look at the left top corner of your document.  You have to click on  'File'.  If it is the first time that you save the document you will see 'save as'.  You have to choose now where you want to save the file and give it a name.

If you keep on typing on that document and you save it again, it will ask you if you want to replace the file, which means all the new changes you have made, will now save.

You may wonder what is the difference between 'save as' and 'save'

  • If you are saving a document for the first time, you will use 'save as' because you want to give it a name
  • you will also use 'save as' if you want to save a copy or a different version of your work
  • if you want to save your work quickly or save the changes you made, you are just going to 'save' and it will automatically save under the same name

It is very important to be organised - if you have a lot of documents, you would maybe like to put it in folders, so that it is easy for you to find it again.

But how do we do that?

All your documents or photos that relate to one another you can put in one folder, which means you do not have to read the names of all your documents, you can just go to the 'folder' and then find the document.

All of your files and folders and information is stored in your 'user account' and you can choose a password for this if you do not want other people to just have access to your files.

If you want to choose a password, try and choose something that is at least 8 letters long and maybe have some capital letter, small letters and numbers in it.

Try and remember your password without writing it down.

  • You are now going to open a 'word document', type a few sentences on it and then practice to save it, then change something on the document and save it again.
  • You also need to be able to create a folder and add the different documents to it.

The more you practice working on the computer, the easier it will be for you.

If you are done with this and you are sure you can do this, you can have some fun and play a few games on https://www.funbrain.com/grade/2
