Today we will be learning about different groups of nouns - keep this summary to refresh your memory if you forget the different types:

Proper noun

This is the name of a specific place or person and they are always written with a capital letter like John, Peter, Cape Town.

Common nouns

These are the names of general things (these are usually the first words a baby learns when he points at something) like cat, dog, book.

Countable nouns

These are nouns that we can count and we can write the word most of the time in plural form like 3 dogs,  2 cats, 6 books.  We also use the word 'many' to find out the number of something.  How many cats are there?

Uncountable nouns

These are nouns we cannot count and they only have singular form.  You have to add a quantifier in front of the noun (a quantifier is something like a cup, a teaspoon, a bucket).  We also ask the question 'How much?'

You cannot say I ate 3 rices, but you can say I ate 3 cups of rice.  These are how we know rice is uncountable.

Collective nouns

These are names given for a group of things like a bunch of grapes, a flight of stairs, a school of fish.  These are words that you will have to study to know the right word for a specific group.
