Lhokseumawe City has an area of ​​approximately 181 square kilometers with a population of more than 203,000. This city was originally the capital of North Aceh Regency. However, since the issuance of Law Number 2 of 2001 concerning the Formation of Cities, Lhokseumawe has officially become an administrative city separate from the District of North Aceh.

Lhokseumawe is known as a gas-producing city in Aceh Province and has gone worldwide. The discovery of large quantities of gas and the establishment of PT Arun NGL provided positive changes for Lhokseumawe. This condition triggered the establishment of a number of industries that depend on gas, such as the company producing urea and ammonia fertilizer, PT Pupuk Iskandar Muda. Furthermore, the cement bag producer PT Kertas Kraf Aceh in North Aceh Regency, the urea fertilizer producer PT Asean Aceh Fertilizer in Lhokseumawe, and a number of oil mining companies in North Aceh.

So the city of Lhokseumawe got the nickname as the city of Petro Dollar. But the term petro dollar is gradually disappearing and fading now the city of Lhoksemawe only looks like an old city with old buildings that look dull with piles of garbage on the side of the road and a very bad smell that is very stuck in the nose.

In the past, the people's economy grew rapidly in Lhokseumawe due to the presence of this company. Lhokseumawe is called the City of Petrodollars because of the high purchasing power of its citizens. The economy is growing and many outsiders work in Lhokseumawe.
