THE PATH THE TRUTH AND LIFE
Surely you like to receive good news. Did you know that Jehovah, the Creator of the universe, has good news for you and your family?
These are found in the Bible, a work that Jehovah caused to be written many, many years ago, especially in four books that bear the name of the people who wrote them: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Well, this publication focuses on these four books of the Bible.
Many people call these stories the four Gospels. The word gospel means "good news", and the truth is that these four books contain good news about Jesus. Which? That Jesus is the means that God has prepared for our salvation and that, as King of the heavenly Kingdom of God, he will bring eternal blessings to all who show faith in him (Mark 10:17, 30; 13:13).
WHY ARE THERE FOUR GOSPELS?
We may wonder why God inspired four different accounts of the life and teachings of Jesus.
Actually, it was good that he did it. Let's take an example. Imagine four men next to a famous teacher. The one in front of the professor is a tax collector. The one on your right is a doctor. The one on his left is a fisherman and a very good friend of him. And the fourth man, who is behind him, is the youngest of them all. The four are sincere people, but have different concerns and points of view. If each of them writes a story about the teachings and activities of the teacher, it is most likely that the four versions collect different details and events. By reading the four writings taking into account the different points of view and goals of their writers, we can get a complete idea of what the teacher said and did. In the same way, having four accounts of the life of Jesus, the Great Teacher, is an advantage.
Let's continue with the example. Suppose the tax collector wants to attract readers of Jewish origin, so he presents some events and teachings to help particularly that group of people. Instead, the doctor prefers to highlight the healing of the sick and crippled. That is why it omits some details that the tax collector does include, or presents them in a different order. On the other hand, the friend of the teacher focuses on the qualities and feelings of this, while the story of the youngest is brief and concise. Even so, all the versions are exact. For the same thing happens with the Gospels: that there are four stories of the life of Jesus helps us to better understand his activities, his teachings and his personality.
People often say "the Gospel of Matthew," "the Gospel of John," and so on. This is correct, since each of them contains "the good news about Jesus Christ" (Mark 1: 1). However, in the broadest sense, there is only one gospel, and we have it available in four different accounts.
Many researchers have compared and ordered the events of the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. That was what the Syrian writer Taciano did, who recognized that these four books were accurate and had been inspired by God. Around 170 he wrote the Diatessaron, a work that combines in a single story the events of Jesus' life and ministry.
This book, entitled Jesus: the way, the truth and life, is a similar work, but more accurate and complete. This is possible because we now understand better the meaning of many examples and parables of Jesus, as well as the fulfillment of many of his prophecies. This makes us understand more clearly what Jesus did and said, and the order in which the events that are narrated took place. In addition, the archaeological discoveries help us to understand certain details and the points of view of the writers. Although we can not be absolutely sure of the order in which all the events occurred, this book presents them in a logical and reasonable order.
THE WAY, THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE
When we read this book, keep in mind the main message it conveys. Remember what Jesus Christ said to the Apostle Thomas: "I am the way, the truth and the life. No one can reach the Father except through me "(John 14: 6).
This book will help us understand why Jesus is without a doubt "the way". Only through Jesus can we pray to Jehovah, be reconciled to him and obtain his approval (John 16:23, Romans 5: 8).
Jesus is also "the truth". He told the truth and lived according to it. In addition, many prophecies came to "be yes through him", which helps us to understand the fundamental role he has in the fulfillment of God's purpose (2 Corinthians 1:20, John 1:14, Revelation 19:10).
And, finally, Jesus Christ is "life." Thanks to the ransom, which he paid by giving his perfect life and shedding his blood, Christ gave us the possibility of reaching "the life that really is life", that is, "eternal life" (1 Timothy 6:12, 19; Ephesians 1 : 7; 1 John 1: 7). He will also be "the life" for millions of people who have died but will be resurrected with the hope of living forever in Paradise (John 5:28, 29).
We all must understand and value the role of Jesus in God's purpose. Without a doubt, we will enjoy learning about Jesus, "the way, the truth and the life".
