Mulan politically revisted.1.
In before the new live-action Mulan is released in 2020. I've watched the cartoon version so many times and now the time has come for a political economy analysis of the film :
- Mulan surreptitiously joins the Chinese army in order to take the place of her aged and infirm father (who had been drafted). The conscription system portrayed in the movie is even more unjust and arbitrary than conscription usually is: each family must provide a soldier, apparently regardless of the age and/or health of the men in the family.
