The Raptor Show

in #birds8 years ago

Last Saturday while @kiwideb and I where in Brisbane with my daughter and grandson, we visited the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. It was a lovely day with clear blue skies and barely a breath of wind.

One of the things we wanted to do while we were there was see the Raptor Show so we scurried off to find it.

Come with us and see what we saw.....

We took our seats and waited, sort of expecting there to be an intro with someone carrying a bird in but to my surprise the lady just stood in front of us and called the bird in.

It flew from quite a way away and landed beside her.

The Australian Kite

Fact: Kites are known to collect embers from bush fires and takes them to unlit places to start new fires so that they can make a meal out of the fleeing prey!! ..... Naughty Birds!!

This is Australia largest bird of prey. It has a wing span of 9 foot 4 inches or 2.84 mtrs.

The Barking owl

The Barking Owls eyes are fixed in its head so it eyes don't move at all.... I found this quite freaky actually...
To compensate for this, his head rotates 270 degrees in both directions and it can turn its head almost upside down....

The Barn Owl

A wee poem to be going on with.....

We went off quickly to see the Raptor show
And plonked ourselves right in the very front row

We'd got there early so waited patiently
Coz we were excited at what we might see

There would be Kites and the Wedge Tailed eagle
With their enormous wingspan looking so regal

Then came the most beautiful Barn Owl
Searching for dinner, it was on the prowl

We felt the wind as it wooshed on by
Crikey dick we coulda lost an eye

It flew so close it nearly parted our hair
It gave us quite a surprise to be fair

We looked at each other like what the f@%k
We didn't even get the chance to duck

Barn Owls fly silently and they have exceptional hearing enabling them to locate and swoop down on their prey completely undetected.
They are around 33 - 39 cm. They eat mainly rodents, birds, frogs and reptiles.

We had a fabulous time watching these awesome birds and I hope you enjoyed a wee look at the Australian Raptors.

Ooh, your pics are really coming along well!

Animals are really hard - and that one looks rather overweight and no at all realistic lol - but I tried :)

Love seeing those magnificent birds. Thanks for sharing your visit to the sanctuary. Lovely poem and drawing. ❤️

Thanks @redheadpei - it was a great day - I need to do another post on the other animals we saw there :)

Beautiful picture, i only saw some birds of prey one time. It was both cool and crazy at the same time. The bird were all under a big tent in booths. As i walked by to view each bird it was crazy. I felt like a lady walking by a group of construction workers. All they did was look at me like a piece of meat. lol Looks like it was an amazing experience

Hehehe thats funny - they were probably sizing you up for dinner. I was quite enjoyable to see how well trained they were too.

Wow - those are big!

They have really long legs - way longer than I expected!

Such majestic animals. I think that owl flying over your head would be a bit of scary if it happened to me. As I am taller than you. She would probably hit me. lol

I think the drawing is amazing. Thank you for sharing your amazing post with us on TOTL all the way from NEW ZELAND. lol

Have an amazing day, my friend. :)

Hehehe at least you got it right this time :P You can't hear them fly at all so we just felt the air woosh by it was quite freaky lol. Thanks for coming to visit :)

Beautiful birds, and a lovely sketch!

😄😇😄

@creatr

Thanks @creatr hehe the sketch is fairly average to be fair but I tried - it needs to go on a diet and I'd have to call it stumpy coz its legs are way too short lol

Kia Ora @andysantics What a fabulous post Andrea. Boy! Am I glad you didn't lose an eye when getting so close to those raptors.
