Harsh realities

Sometimes it gets a little overwhelming.

In the last few years people that have gone through the Family Services system have been suing the government of Canada, most recently First Nations Children that were taken and adopted out to non-native families.

Some never knew who their real parents where or where they came from.

I’m helping a few reconnect and in doing so I’m helping them collect their recent settlement with the government.

This requires sitting down and hearing the stories about what happened to them as children; Some were only a few months old when they were taken.

One in particular explained to me that she was adopted but ended up in Child Services for fifteen years. Her brothers and sisters were also taken away, She was six before she met her mother.

That was painful. To know your mom is out there but not allowed to see her for six years.

Even then she remained in the system bouncing from home to home, only seeing her family once or twice a year.

She’s in her seventies now.

But what a horrible memory to have.

She turned eighteen and was kicked out of the system without money or a place to stay; But was able to get home to her family at that point. She found a good job and a great career... spending the majority of life helping others.

That sucks.

She reminded me too that the system hasn’t changed, it’s exactly the same as it was when she was a kid; So expect more lawsuits in the coming decades until its fixed.
