How to survive: tornadoes edition!

in #science10 years ago (edited)

Some of you don't live near where tornadoes can form....or so you thought. Climate change has increased the range of tornadoes and they are becoming stronger, more common, and far more deadly. You need to know where to hide on the go, in your home or anywhere else you can think of.

Why are tornadoes so dangerous?

Tornadoes inside and around have extremely strong winds. They are rated by the Fujita scale (f for short). F0 is 42-72 mph, not too fast. It can knock over a few trees and rip bricks of chimneys. F3 is 158-206 mph which can rip roofs off even well constructed houses. F5 261-318 mph, This tornado can pick up houses and cars and throw them hundreds of meters. You may not survive this one easily, the bad part is they are also becoming for common.

How can I prepare at home?

You can make sure you have a few import things on hand.

  • A flashlight
  • A mattress (i'll explain that in a minute)
  • A basement or bathroom with closed off windows
  • Some extra food, water and medical supplies stored in a safe place
You need a flashlight in case the power goes out. If a tornado breaks the windows of your house glass will be flying everywhere. A mattress held over you can soak it up and save you the pain (and possible death). Basements are the safest place from tornadoes. Tornadoes go over land and due to the nature of its vortex can not easily break it and send a part down into a small area. Bathrooms have the most pipes out of any place in your house. Pipes are strong metal and hold the room together, this means a tornado will have a harder time breaking through it. If the tornado is large or strong enough it can destroy other buildings, for example, the supermarket down the street. You need to be prepared as they can leave you stranded in a destroyed city.

What can I do if I haven't prepared yet?

Shame on you! You need to hide under a piece of furniture in your basement. If you only have a bathroom get in the bathtub and lay a mattress from your bed over you and hope that will save you. Be prepared to call for help on your phone because you have no food or water and that cut on your leg is infected.

What if i'm in my car? How can I save myself?

Remember before when I said it's hard for a tornadoe to go into small dips? On almost every highway there are some on the side. If you are not on a highway look for one as quickly as possible. Do not park your car next to it. The car could easily be picked up or pushed and crush you. If you can make sure you are able to grab a tree root because the ride is about to get bumpy.
Some people say you can hide underneath a highway overpass. Most experts say that's a bad idea. As the tornado goes around the wind will be funneled through it and thus become more powerful and likely push you out.

What should I do after the tornado?

Wait for the storm to finish. Multiple tornadoes happen all the time.
After you wait for the worst of the storm to pass, get outside. Your house is likely not that stable anymore and others were not as fortunate as you. Some their house collapsed, another is old and frail and one kids parents were not home. You need to check if your neighbors are alright and help them out if you can. You wouldn't want to survive a tornado to die right after because of a cut on your leg now would you? Neither do they.

Also don't go out and watch it.....They can throw stuff from miles away
