Steemit: Setting A New Standard For Posts
Steemit is not like Facebook, minds.com, or other social networks where you can edit your thoughts and posts unto perpetuity. After a time - after payout - they are as they are, for all time (supposing the computers housing them are not destroyed). While this is understandable, it fundamentally alters the use of the site.
These two things - payout uneditability and permanency - even more so than with the regular Internet -- this being both a weakness (no privacy) and a strength (anti-censorship) -- the result is encouraging short, newsish articles. Ideally, these articles act similar to Wikipedia pages, maximizing readable nuggets, and profitable reads, both for author and reader.
Make no mistake about it - steemit is changing the face and context of social media, via users. Steemit is setting a standard, a standard which will eventually be replaced by social network sites that include both profitability and a MaidSafe feature - the ability to choose what will and will not be public, with possibly extreme customization, along with the current ability to edit your posts on perpetuity.
I don't like that I can't edit the posts after a while, but I also recognize that I can simply make new ones that I can.
