RE: Why I am Very Disappointed by the Upcoming V8 Removal of the Magnitude Component of the Gridcoin Staking Weight

in #gridcoin7 years ago (edited)

Regardless of the requirements for security, which are correctly being put first, this seems like huge change to make without community input.

This is my main concern in moving to v8. Many polls have come to pass that could by comparison be called trivial. To vote on a preferred color of a logo, or the preferred cpu project in the Pentathlon, etc. I had not personally been aware of v8 until it was listed in the changelog of the new wallet version.

I don't think it's too unreasonable to expect major decisions like this to involve community input before being enacted.

So instead of implementing critical network security patches, we should introduce weeks of delay?

I do agree that we need proper discourse when proposing mandatory upgrade changes, however given the severity of the issues patched with v8 the change without full discourse is justified. Future changes which aren't as critically required will certainly be discussed by the entire community.

Fake argument. These issues were known for a longer time afaik.

Issues being known and weaponized exploits capable of taking advantage of said vulnerable issue being released to the public are two different things though. The reality is that these changes are required because an attack could be launched pre-mandatory upgrade.

I fully appreciate the need to patch severe security issues. However, I was not involved in any discussions on them, so my knowledge is somewhat limited.

Was it not possible to fix these issues without adding another level of difficulty for new miners? Or was this a temporary measure on the path to making a more balanced reward system?

So involve yourself in the development process? You don't need to know how to program, just reading over large issue threads to give your own curated view of participants posts could help steer development.

No, the priority is to establish a secure network to which once the dust has settled we can analyze the true staking reality (everything is speculation right now) and react appropriately once other high priority dev items are out the way.

Network security has been prioritized over staking priority for POR crunchers, there are multiple proposals for improving the POR mechanism which are publicly documented on github (wiki).

So involve yourself in the development process

Given the abundance of time, I'd love to. But lacking this, I'm left seeking summarizations of the bigger picture, from people like yourself who are much more involved.

But thank you. I do appreciate your explanation here, as I hadn't come across any further clarification prior.
