Children of Russian women accused of co-operating with ISIS return home

Thirty Russian children left Baghdad International Airport headed for Russia on Sunday. They landed at Moscow's Zhukovsky International Airport later the same day.

The children were transferred from an Iraqi prison where they were being held alongside their Russian mothers who are accused of co-operating with Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL).

All of the minors were born in Russia which facilitated a return to Moscow. Their relatives live in a number of Russian regions, including Dagestan, Chechnya, Moscow and Penza.

Children's Rights Commissioner for the President of the Russian Federation Anna Kuznetsova escorted children and organised their legal support.

Kuznetsova revealed that a further 80 children will shortly return to Russia from Iraq, including 36 babies.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs believe that there are a total of 699 children belonging to Russian citizens who parted for the Middle East.
