Psycho-Sand Sculpture

One of the most iconic scenes every filmed, 'The shower scene' from Alfred Hitchcock's 'Psycho' always shocks and inspires me but, did you know that Hitchcock may not have even directed it? There is some speculation that it may have indeed been directed by the legendary graphic artists Sal Bass who did the storyboards for the movie and had done the title sequence for many of Hitchcock's films.
Judging by the storyboards which are nearly a shot by shot telling of the scene it is an interesting legend. This is one of the things I love about my job, during my research I am always discovering interesting stories about the material.

For this sculpture which I carved in Oss, Holland in 2016 I wanted to pay homage to this story. I used iconic relief images from the film and placed them on a structure of Hitchcock's head which was based on his famous side profile squiggle, which Hitchcock actually drew himself.

Time was tight on this sculpture as I only had 5 days to complete it but, even though the sculpture was a bit rough around the edges I think the idea was there. I have always looked at sand sculpture like a 3 dimensional sketch. With the limitations you have in time and the sand itself you are never fully happy but if the idea you were trying to express comes across I think the audience will forgive these little blemishes.
